It’s “hey mama.” So ordinary. So humbling. They ask for me. No one else. It’s comfort only I can give. It’s a warm body pressed against mine. Sleepy eyes pouring into mine. It’s “how did you sleep.” “Did you have good dreams?” Sacred moments only I get to drink. It’s back tickles. Its warm tears wiped away. Kissed away. Salt on my lips. I would drink up every sorrow if I could. You’d never feel an ounce of pain. It’s seeing every version of you in that face. One and two and three and twelve. I can even see your sonogram profile. The day I fell in love with you. The day I knew I’d give up my life for someone I’d ever even met. The day I knew I loved a grainy black and white 2d alien more than anything else on this planet. How could that be? It was a love that bewildered me. And terrified me. Suddenly I had so much to gain. And everything to lose. Every “bye mama” and you skip out the door, could that be the last time? 13 years ago today we eloped under a big tree. We made promises to each other. You promised to make me laugh every single day and I promised to keep your heart safe. We didn’t know of the hardships we’d face. We didn’t know we’d face financial struggles, chronic illness, mental illness, and so much more. I didn’t have a clue what an incredible husband and father you would be. I got so lucky that day choosing you. We were so young. I felt good about my choice but I had no idea how lucky I was picking the most wonderful man. We’ve changed so much and grown so much together. Chasing little ones With dimpled hands And curly heads I was weary And sometimes sad But little did I know I had it all They told me it would go fast And I’d smile and nod I know I know Every minute slipping through my fingers like quicksand And everyday passing like an eternity I blinked and I shouldn’t have They got big like the grocery store ladies promised They’re more beautiful than I ever imagined What I didn’t plan for was waking up sick one day, and never getting better I wish my kids knew a healthy me back when they had dimples in their hands And I had that lightness Will they remember it? I cry, I want you to know me. Not me in bed. Or the me with the short fuse. I want you know me on the back of a motorcycle, hair blowing in the wind. Me staying up till sunrise, just to see how it feels. Me that couldn’t sleep because I was so in awe of your face, I couldn’t believe we were existing in the same realm. I guess it’s all me. Sometimes I get emotional when I see it all come together so beautifully. The pieces we sourced, or sewed. Some as old as 100 years or more. The way it looks like us, on a shelf. The collective energy of women coming together to create something so beautiful- backed by generations of women with stories to tell. Stories of strength, wisdom, and love. Gifts of cross stitch, quilts made by hand, or painted porcelain. So much love and time goes into sourcing items, cleaning and polishing, curating, pricing, tagging, displaying, and posting.
