War Machine 🎬
This dummy was a really fast turnaround for everyone involved, but I absolutely loved working on it. The hair punching was a real highlight for me using different textures and of hair is always exciting.
The dummy was wearing a helmet for the scenes,so my main focus was on what would actually be visually seen on screen. The hair still needed to be in close resemblance to the actor, so it was all about getting the visible areas and hair punching just right for camera.
The end product was a huge team effort by everyone at @scarecrew_studios . This body ended up being used every single day, and it was great to see that everyone’s hard work held up throughout.
Really proud of what the whole team achieved on this one. 🔥 by @nadiasemanic

Apex -The finer details.Close-up of punching individual hairs to seamlessly blend with the wig I pre-cut and styled to bring this look to life.To save time, preparation was key. Due to the heavy density of the moustache and goatee stubble, I fabricated these HD lace pieces beforehand. From there, I hand-punched the rest of the finer stubble to create a flawless, natural blend.👉 Swipe to see the pieces before they were applied to the dummy! @makeupeffectsgroup by @nadiasemanic

Apex - another behind-the-scenes look at the male dummy while it was still in the studio. This work-in-progress photo was taken before the final refinements to the hairline were made, while I was still carefully developing the overall look and colour variation.
The real-life individual had very prominent streaks of grey throughout his hair, which needed to be faithfully replicated to achieve an authentic, natural result. Following this photo, I used a combination of fine mohair and alpaca to soften and refine the edge of the hairline, while preserving those distinctive grey tones.

It’s these subtle finishing details that help bring a piece to life and keep it as true to the original individual as possible.

A big thank you to @makeupeffectsgroup for trusting me with the hair work on this project. by @nadiasemanic

Apex — another dive into the other character found in the cave.
For this character, I sourced a wig that closely replicated the actor’s natural grey tones. I then cut away the front of the wig to follow the actor’s natural recession and colour pattern, before individually punching hair around the hairline.

This detailed process is what creates the seamless, natural finish and helps achieve the realism and likeness of the actor.

This image captures me punching the hair around the hairline — one of those finer details that makes all the difference. 🎬 @makeupeffectsgroup by @nadiasemanic

On Apex — both dummies on set in the cave, depicted as they appear in the film for a confronting scene where both are unclothed.
Moments like this demand perfection in every element of the craftsmanship. The hair was no exception .every detail matters. With the cave’s dark lighting, I had to carefully choose the shade of colours for both dummies hair to be matched with the final cinematography in mind, ensuring it stayed true to the character and read correctly on screen. @makeupeffectsgroup 🎬 by @nadiasemanic

Apex! 🍿 This picture shows how the character was planned to look on set for the cave sequences. To keep things completely authentic to the actress’s beautiful natural curls, a seamless match was needed. @makeupeffectsgroup requested the wig was as close as possible to her natural texture , and most importantly held that curl even when wet , the end result looked very authentic . I hair-punched the front using human hair of the same texture and detailed the hairline with mohair for the most natural finish possible. by @nadiasemanic

Here is one of the dummies I did hair work on for the film! The two dummies made by @makeupeffectsgroup were used at a pivotal moment when Charlize Theron’s character discovers the missing people dead hanging in a cave.
My main mission was to perfectly match the hair to the actor’s natural look in colour, texture, and density. To get that ultra-realistic, life-like appearance, I customized a sourced wig by adding extra hair along the front lace line. From there, it was all about blending and detailing the hairline to mimic natural growth patterns on the silicon dummy.
It turned out so beautifully and shows the power of prepping !Because the foundation was ready to go, the final application and detailing only took a single day. I always strive to work quickly and efficiently while keeping a sharp eye on the details.

The completed back piece for Goolagong. ✨
Swipe to the first video to see the custom zig-zag edge requested by hair and makeup designer @johnniemakeup . By avoiding a straight line, these peaks and troughs allow the piece to blend flawlessly with Lila’s natural hair. For the craftsmanship, I strategically varied the knotting density to balance realism and durability. I used tight double knots at the nape area and side panels to withstand the heavy wear and tear of filming, swipe to image 2 to see this, I always try to keep my double knots small. I used single knots with closer density through the top section for an incredibly natural look. As mentioned previously, I built the central section of this foundation with an extra-thick theatre lace for maximum structural longevity. I began knotting this from the nape up as seen in the final image while beginning to vary my density and spacing out as I reached the internal section
@thisisgabihavens continued with internal knotting, following my direction of using 1–2 hairs missing two holes so it blended seamlessly into the final look. by @nadiasemanic

Loving how seamlessly this Evonne Goolagong piece integrated into Lila’s natural hair! ✨ Huge shoutout to hair and makeup designer @johnniemakeup and the incredible on-set team the magic really happens in the styling to get that flawless, completely natural look. 🙌
Every successful project is a great opportunity to grow. John beautifully permed this piece to blend it in to match the texture of Lila’s hair in the film. In the future, to keep the hair in optimum condition and give the piece maximum longevity, I would love to try pre-boiling the hair to the desired roller size before knotting it in. It’s such a gentle way to perfect the texture and ensure the style lasts even longer on set! Always learning and elevating the craft. 💫

Goolagong ✨
The foundation
It was an absolute privilege to design a custom back piece for the talented Lila McGuire! 🎬
Working alongside AACTA-nominated hair and makeup designer John Logue was an incredible collaborative experience. In our initial creative meeting, we focused heavily on the technical details, discussing the perfect lace density and application process.
To ensure the piece withstood the fast-paced pressures of being on set, we crafted the nape section with a double-layered, coated lace. This gave John and @deblester123 the extra durability and structural integrity needed for secure pinning. An hd edging was incorporated into the design to give flexibility on the off chance after it was fitted baby hairs were going to be needed.Following John’s specific request, we constructed the main base using traditional theatre back lace for optimal stiffness, which made the final application seamless.
Huge thanks to @johnniemakeup and the team for their trust and brilliant direction! 🙏💫

Behind the scenes with the dummy on set featuring the hair gag coming out of its mouth. It’s always fascinating how something that seems so simple in theory requires so much thought, planning, and problem solving behind the scenes to make it work seamlessly on camera.
In my previous posts I spoke about the importance of preparing the hair wefts, the trial and error involved in creating the sock piece to fit correctly in the dummy’s mouth and the option of being able to put it in the actors mouth if required.. A lot of workshop time went into testing and refining the process to achieve the right result and ensure both applications worked seamlessly together.
While this was one part of the build that I personally had to workshop through, this was just one small part of the final outcome. Everyone at @scarecrew_studios brought this to life in the workshop and on set, and it’s always rewarding seeing all of those contributions come together in the final result. by @nadiasemanic

Together
There are a couple of different scenes where hair emerges from Dave Franco’s mouth, as though it were being pulled from a plug. We came up with a couple of different designs one using large beads that the wefts were stitched onto and another initial design that involved creating a small “sock” to sit between the teeth, using stretch material and stitching around the opening where the hair would be drawn through. It took me a few attempts to get the fit and design right, along with the correct amount of hair.
I used handmade wefts for a thinner, less bulky appearance compared to machine wefts, then rolled and stitched them together to form a rounded yet flat base. In image 3 you can see a direct comparison comparing regular machine wefts to hand made and although it is more time consuming it is worth it when you need a seamless slimmer look where you can control the density.I secured this inside the “customised sock” by stitching it in so that when one strand was pulled, the rest would follow seamlessly.
Just one of several hair gags in the film, but this wasreally enjoyable concept to develop and make. Swipe right some pictures of the process thankyou @scarecrew_studios and the rest of the team for having me part of this by @nadiasemanic
