This late fall and winter I’ve been working on some projects as an artist in residence at the Hollywood Art and Culture Center @thecenterhollywood 🌟 February is my last month in residence, and I’m having an open studio alongside @harumiabeartist this Sunday from 1-4 pm! Come by, I’d love to share some of what I have been working on and planning for the coming year.

During this time, I’ve been in pre-production for my short film, produced as a fellow with @thrdhrzn and the @visionaryjusticestorylab. I’ve been in research and planning mode for my textile installation/performance work, and I’ve made progress on some new paintings and mixed media pieces.

I want to share more about my personal art practice on social media. Because I create a lot of content for the tattoo side of my practice, it can lead to burn out and limited capacity to also edit and share documentation of my art practice. I know that what I water grows though and I want to practice sharing in progress work. I am definitely unlearning perfectionism, but having a public practice requires a level of vulnerability and this seems like a first step 💛 taken in Miami, Florida by @nadiawolff.studio

Hi y’all ❤️‍🔥 I’m excited to be sharing a teaser for the short film “Chante Lapenn” that I have been working on for the last few months as part of @oolitearts Little Haiti Local Love Letters series. You can catch my film and many others from brilliant Miami filmmakers tomorrow December 13 at 7 pm at the Little Haiti Cultural Center 🇭🇹👼🏾🇭🇹 I’m looking forward to folks getting to see a peak into this project, and I’ll be sharing some ways to support the final stages of this film soon 🌟 BTS photos by @beau_nicole 🌟

This short film is an experimental grief portrait exploring the emotional weight of social displacement in Little Haiti. The film’s title “Chante Lapenn” translates to “Mourning Song” in Haitian Kreyol. Though this commission’s initial prompt was for “love letters” I was compelled to explore grief as an aspect of love, initially inspired by the idea that grief is just love upside down.

I consider this film to be a grief portal, spiritually charged, grounded in ancestor poet and activist Audre Lorde’s understanding that poetry is not a luxury but rather an art form through which the most marginalized in our society forge survival, hope, and resilience through the pain of oppression

The Local Love Letters: Little Haiti commissions are short narrative and documentary films that speak to everyday life in the neighborhood, from a teen trying to adjust to life in the United States, to two schools girls who outwit their perceptive grandmother and skip school.

With Pass the Mic, a partnership with @cipmiami, filmmakers are paired with residents for documentaries on pressing justice issues Miamians face daily - including affordable healthcare, immigration and criminal justice reform.

“We Pursue Our Magic” Acrylic on canvas. 30” x 40”

I’m excited to be showing this painting and a drawing at NADA @newartdealers with @youngarts during Miami Art Week ❤️‍🔥 swipe for close up details of this painting and some process pics.

This piece’s title draws from Audre Lorde’s essay “Poetry is not a Luxury.” I have been returning to this essay a lot lately. Here’s an excerpt below:

“The quality of light by which we scrutinize our lives has direct bearing upon the product which we live, and upon the changes which we hope to bring about through those lives. It is within this light that we form those ideas by which we pursue our magic and make it realized. This is poetry as illumination, for it is through poetry that we give name to those ideas which are, until the poem, nameless and formless-about to be birthed, but already felt. That distillation of experience from which true poetry springs births thought as dream births concept, as feeling births idea, as knowledge births (precedes) understanding.

As we learn to bear the intimacy of scrutiny, and to flourish within it, as we learn to use the products of that scrutiny for power within our living, those fears which rule our lives and form our silences begin to lose their control over us….

These places of possibility within ourselves are dark because they are ancient and hidden; they have survived and grown strong through darkness. Within these deep places, each one of us holds an incredible reserve of creativity and power, of unexamined and unrecorded emotion and feeling. Some areas healed some fresh in the first few photos with polarizing lens, then some without, and last few pictures are 7 weeks healed photos.

Summer books are currently closed but my waitlist for August to October bookings in Miami is in my bio 🤍

“Portal” | Stoll knit cotton and wool | 9’ × 4’

I’m showing this textile piece in the group exhibition “Sites of the Self”, thoughtfully curated by Rene Morales @renebot2. Come to the show opening and open studios 6-9 pm this evening at @oolitearts to see this piece and what I’ve been working on in the studio 🌟

“A parallel sentiment arises in Nadia Wolff’s Portal (2021), a knit tapestry featuring two Black women—one dark-skinned, the other light-skinned—drawn from advertisements for beauty products. Executed with a digital knitting machine, the composition is obscured by a “solar flare” that abstracts the image, almost to the point of consuming it entirely. Wolff displays the work differently each time it is installed, contorting the textile on the wall such that the image is further obscured. The work recalls Glissant’s insistence on the “right to opacity,” a mode of defying the aggressive demand for full ontological transparency that has long characterized Western thought and driven Western colonialism. Wolff carries this vital resource over into the digital age.” –Rene Morales

I had the absolute privilege of starting this back piece for a lovely client to connect them with their Belizean heritage. Creating this really felt like composing a painting!

This back piece centers on the great kiskadee bird, endemic to Central America, as well as cohune palms and hibiscus blooms.

They wanted to represent the sense of a breeze flowing through palms in this tropical scene, and we were able to achieve that through the palms’ contours on the body.

They also shared with me that the great kiskadee is widely regarded in Central and South American cultures as a powerful spiritual symbol of joy, hope, prosperity, and guidance. Often associated with good luck and positive omens due to its bright yellow chest, this bird is considered a messenger that brings knowledge from the spirit world.

They flew in to start this project, which we worked on over 3 back to back days. As always I am immensely humbled and grateful for the trust to create this work! So excited to develop the shading on this back piece in future sessions.

a peek into the installation process for my end of residency exhibit at @youngarts 🤍 I am presenting a multi-disciplinary showcase, which you can view in the YoungArts gallery 10-6 pm everyday during Miami Art Week until December 7!

There will be a breakfast and artist panel discussion from 9-11:30 am this Thursday, December 4. I will also be in the gallery throughout the week so please reach out to set up times for a walk through.
