Who do you want to become? And what’s it going to take to get there? During a recent Friendtorship session, one of our students shared that they wanted to be someone who brings peace and calm. We followed up with a simple question: “Do you think you show up like that now?” The answer was no. And that’s where the real conversation began. Instead of focusing on where the student was falling short, we encouraged them to think about the steps they could take to become the person they want to be. That’s what growth looks like. Recognizing where you are, thinking about where you want to go, and having someone in your corner who’s willing to help you get there. Through Friendtorship, we’re creating opportunities for our young people to reflect, build self-awareness, develop confidence, and understand that personal growth is a process. We don’t expect them to have everything figured out. HEMPSTEAD, WE’RE STILL REELING FROM SATURDAY! 🔥❤️🙏🏾 What an incredible day for our community! Saturday’s @thezeddywill RallyFest was a success, and we’re still feeling the energy, excitement, and love that filled Kennedy Memorial Park! 🙌🏾 At Naeem Justice, we were proud to help bring this event to life, not just for the music and entertainment, but for something bigger. Bringing our community together, raising awareness around voting and civic engagement, and reminding our young people that their voices matter. 🗳️ With election season underway, we were especially grateful to have elected officials and community leaders join us. Giving our young people opportunities to hear from those serving and representing our communities is an important part of helping them become more informed, engaged, and connected to the decisions that affect their lives. Because civic engagement starts with awareness, education, and understanding that every voice has value. A HUGE thank you to @thezeddywill , @villageofhempsteadparks , all the performers and DJs, our community partners, sponsors, volunteers, elected officials, local leaders, and everyone who worked behind the scenes to make RallyFest possible. Who do you want the world to see when they look at you? It’s a simple question, but one that can lead to some powerful conversations. During a recent Friendtorship session, Dr. Leo Sullivan encouraged our students to reflect on how they want others to see them and, more importantly, how their everyday actions reflect that. From the way we speak to others to the attitudes we carry and the choices we make, these are opportunities to help young people better understand themselves. And that’s a big part of what we’re building through Friendtorship. We’re creating a space where our youth can have honest conversations, develop self-awareness, learn from their experiences, and recognize that they’re capable of growing into the people they want to become. Because growth doesn’t happen all at once. Sometimes it starts with a question, a conversation, and someone willing to listen. Sometimes, the things holding us back are the things we’re afraid to say out loud. During our first Friendtorship session, our students were challenged to reflect on their fears, insecurities, and the things that make them feel judged. Led by Dr. Leo Sullivan, this exercise encouraged our youth to open up, recognize what’s affecting their confidence, and begin learning how to work through those feelings. Because building confidence isn’t just about telling young people to believe in themselves. It’s about creating safe spaces where they feel heard, supported, and comfortable being who they are. That’s what Friendtorship is all about. Through mentorship, mental health education, and meaningful conversations, we’re helping our youth develop the emotional awareness, confidence, and life skills they need to grow. Introducing FRIENDTORSHIP! Our new 8-week youth development program. Every young person deserves a safe space to grow, someone they can trust, and people who believe in their potential. That’s what we’re building through Friendtorship, Naeem Justice’s youth development and mentorship program. Through weekly sessions, facilitated by Leo Sullivan, Ed.D., LMHC-D, focused on mental health education, mentorship, emotional awareness, leadership, and personal growth, we’re helping students build the confidence and skills they need to navigate life’s challenges and prepare for their future. Our first eight-week cohort is officially underway, and we’re excited to share this journey with you! Over the coming weeks, we’ll be giving you a look inside the program, introducing the people helping guide our students, and sharing the lessons, experiences, and opportunities that make Friendtorship special. Sickle cell comes with a lot to learn, and families shouldn’t have to figure it all out by themselves. Knowing your status, learning how to advocate, preparing early for the transition from pediatric to adult care, and finding a community of support can all make a meaningful difference along the journey. These are lessons families often learn through experience, which is part of why Naeem Justice exists. Born from one family’s journey with sickle cell, our goal is to help other families feel informed, supported, connected, and heard.
