Meet one of our newest NAHN members! ⚕️

· Sandra De Loera, AS, AAS, RN

Current Role/Position:

Cardiac stepdown

A little about Sandra:

My name is Sandra, and I started my nursing career in 2019. I was a certified nurse assistant for 6 years before obtaining my RN license. I’m truly passionate about advocating for education and mental health. I believe in holistic nursing and its ability to heal. My goal is to continue my education in nursing to become an adolescent psychiatric nurse practitioner.

I joined NAHN Oklahoma because I want to be able to give back to the Hispanic/Latino communities. I want to be able to use the knowledge I have and make someone’s life a bit better. I want to inspire individuals to pursue higher education in healthcare and build trust within our healthcare systems.

I’m looking forward in becoming a well known and safe chapter. A chapter where empathy, compassion, trustworthy, and leadership is expressed. Where advocacy is firm and strong. We are stronger together!

Meet one of our newest NAHN members! ⚕️

·Laura Duran, DNP, RN, CNE-CL

Current Role/Position:

Clinical Assistant Professor, University of Oklahoma Fran and Earl Ziegler College of Oklahoma

A little about Laura:

Hi! I’m Laura! I’m originally from El Paso, Texas, and recently moved to Oklahoma. I’ve been a nurse for a little over 10 years, with most of my clinical background in critical care, and transitioned into nursing education in 2023.

I grew up incredibly fortunate to be surrounded by my culture in a Spanish-speaking household where my grandparents and family passed down our language, traditions, and love of family. We are very much the “50 people in one room” kind of family. Loud, close, and full of love. Staying connected to my culture and passing our language and traditions on is incredibly important to me.

Moving to Oklahoma was honestly a huge culture shock. Coming from El Paso, I didn’t realize how much I valued being surrounded by Hispanic culture, community, and representation until I no longer experienced it in the same way. I went looking for a local NAHN chapter because I wanted that connection, and when I realized there wasn’t one, I started reaching out to others.

I quickly learned I wasn’t the only one looking for it. From there, it became a collective effort with an incredible group of people who shared the same vision and helped turn the idea of NAHN Oklahoma into something real.

I want NAHN Oklahoma to become a strong, sustainable statewide community that creates opportunities through mentorship, scholarships, professional development, outreach, and service.

More than anything, I want this chapter to be a place where people feel like they belong, where their voices are heard, and where they have people in their corner encouraging them to pursue opportunities they may not have thought were possible. I want us to create those opportunities, open doors for one another, and help the next person believe, “I can do that too.”

Sometimes all it takes is seeing someone who looks like you, comes from a similar background, or believes in you to realize what is possible.

We're still growing!

One area we’re especially focused on is growing our student representation 📚.

We want nursing students to have a voice in what we’re building, opportunities to connect with nurses and healthcare professionals across Oklahoma, and a chance to get involved early in their nursing journey.

To help make that possible we are awarding 𝐓𝐖𝐎 scholarships to cover the cost of a NAHN student membership for unlicensed nursing students 🩺.

Whether you’re just starting nursing school or getting ready to graduate, there is a place for you here.
