Her grandfather raised a fist for justice, now she’s raising the bar for the next generation leading our DreambuildHER afterschool program in partnership with Cal Berkeley and Kipp Bridge Academy 💛💙

Meet Nairobi Smith, the third-generation Cal student-athlete, sprinter, and advocate carrying forward Dr. Tommie Smith’s legacy, because legacy runs deep and purpose runs strong.

“Being a TrackGirl is about more than just running fast. It’s about carrying forward the strength, purpose, and power that came before me.”

The torch was never passed, it was carried.

Today it is October 16 2026. But 58 years ago, in 1968, a sacrifice was made. Tommie Smith and John Carlos recognized they had an opportunity to be seen, when they could not be heard. I, Nairobi Smith, as the granddaughter of Dr. Tommie Smith and as an athlete, student and leader myself, I carry this legacy with fierce pride.

I want everyone to remember, as we continue to fight the fight for human rights, that this moment in ‘68 is within our timeline, and we have a duty to carry their baton. Keep telling the stories that matter to you.
