New online journal entry 🖌️ Meet Tomoka Naka 🖤 Born in Osaka in 1991, Tomoka Naka began practicing calligraphy at the age of seven, training within the Seihitsu-kai tradition. What began as childhood discipline evolved into a lifelong inquiry. Naka, approaches calligraphy not as preservation, but as transformation. Working through the visual language of fashion, she reframes this ancient practice within a contemporary context, allowing brushstrokes to inhabit garments, campaigns, and global platforms. She has presented exhibitions in New York, Los Angeles, and Paris. Her emphasis remains inward: continual inquiry, refinement, and the understanding that she is still “on the path” of exploration. Her brush lettering has also appeared in major commercial campaigns, and high-profile collaborations, bringing calligraphy into everyday cultural spaces. LAにてオーダーして下さった作品が @archdigest へ掲載していただきました。 @amandagnwn @joelwong.z 2人が手掛ける素晴らしい空間に溶け込むそんな作品をとても誇らしく思います。 そして作品が国境を超え、素晴らしいメディアに取り上げていただけた事大変嬉しく思います。 #Repost @archdigest with @use.repost ・・・ “The life force of this house is so strong. You can almost feel the whole ecosystem around you,” says Amanda Gunawan, one half of @owiudesign, the LA-based architecture and design firm she founded with her husband, Joel Wong. Gunawan is referring to the home they share in the hills of La Cañada Flintridge. A guiding principle during this process was the influence of Japan, which Gunawan and Wong (who are both originally from Singapore) have visited upwards of 20 times. “What we admire so much about Japan is a general philosophy, almost a duty, to be the best that they can be at whatever it is they do,” Gunawan says.
