I was born in San Francisco, and if not for my father being murdered when I was 4, I think I might’ve never left. Instead, my mom put down roots in Oakland, and I grew up being “from” Oakland. In truth, I love Oakland and always will, but I’ve never felt more at home than when in San Francisco. Everyone complains about parking, and the traffic, and the lack of diversity, but all I see is the skyline, the attention to detail in architecture, the beautiful places to visit, the wide array of things to do. I have just always wanted to be able to afford to buy a home here because I absolutely love to be here, which brings me to the bigger point: why are houses $12 Trillion what tf is wrong with these people fr?! taken in San Francisco, California by @nakyajoi

While it’s true that we are no longer close friends, what she said opened the door to a much larger conversation about race and the boxes we place each other in, often at the expense of our own community which honestly breaks my heart.

Black women don’t have to speak, look, behave, dress, or create in one specific way to be valid in our Blackness. Blackness is not a monolith. I am undeniably Black everywhere I go, and proudly so.

The majority of my content is lifestyle. My lifestyle. The places I genuinely go, the things I genuinely enjoy, and the life I’m intentionally building. Softness, beautiful spaces, travel, fashion, luxury experiences, wellness, and creativity are not reserved for white people. They never were!

For generations, many opportunities have been less accessible to Black communities because of systemic barriers, not because we lack the interest, curiosity, or capacity to enjoy them. That’s why representation matters. When more of us occupy different spaces, we expand what’s imaginable for the next generation.

I’ve found that when you allow yourself to explore new spaces and embrace opportunities outside of what you’ve always known, you discover more of who you are. Some of my favorite memories have been made in rooms where I wasn’t expected to be. Not because those spaces belonged to someone else, but because I refused to let other people’s expectations determine where I belonged.

Along the way, I’ve met so many Black women who, like me, don’t fit every stereotype placed on us, whether those stereotypes come from outside our community or within it, and I think that’s a beautiful thing. There isn’t one right way to be a Black woman. None of us is more “Black” than another because of how we dress, where we vacation, what music we listen to, how we wear our hair, or the content we create. taken in San Francisco, California by @nakyajoi
