Absolutely my favorite way to spend a day ‘off’. Gathered with fellow artists and eating fancyish snacks and watching videos of other artist who inspire us! And it rains ! And we periodically holler at the screen like frat boys at a superbowl watch party- when the perfect dab of Naples yellow hits the perfect edge of forehead !!! And everything almost seems fine in the world.

3. Inspiration : #kathekollwitz / @ann.galepaint

4. Instructional video exploring painting blown out lights: @nicolasuribeb <~~~ I can’t recommend his videos enough !!! Look up ‘our painted lives’ on YouTube.

5/6. Live painting demo by : @sherriemcgraw1234

7/8. Paintings by @k.sasai_paintings

I tried to make these artists and their work and institutions searchable if you wanted to watch a full demo. One of the very few silver linings of this digital hellscape is having such incredible access to watching artists work in a way that simply never would have been possible in the past. Feel free to drop recommendations of your favorites in the comments if you feel like it! taken in New Orleans, Louisiana by @namelessart2012

15 min street portrait - charcoal on paper - drawn in Jackson sq. Estoban was visiting from New York. We talked about his days in the past as a model. About the cousin he traveled with because otherwise that cousin wouldn’t go anywhere ever. About how fast nyc is compared to New Orleans. I lived in nyc in ‘03 before moving to here in ‘04. I remember I’d get stuck behind a group of tourists and in my head I’d be screaming ‘move ! MOVE! Move your ass!’ And then one day I looked around and realized - oh, it’s me. I have to slow down. And I’m glad I did. by @namelessart2012

15 minute street portrait drawn in Jackson square ; charcoal on paper - this woman was so sweet and quiet. Sometimes I get a really strong impression when I’m drawing and with this one I kept thinking about the desire to be unperceived. I wonder if that will become a more sought after experience as surveillance capabilities expand. I already see articles about how the new luxury is to be offline. I wonder if the cultural pendulum will swing from the gaudy shameless ‘look at me!’ Culture we’ve been in into something quieter. taken in Jackson Square, New Orleans Louisana by @namelessart2012

Drew a lot of 15 minute portraits this weekend … this one was kind of a treat because there was so much beard. I could easily have tried this one a few times. Most of the work I did this weekend I really enjoyed while I was drawing and then right when it was done all I wanted to do was start from a different angle and try it again. This guy was a man of few words and hopped in the seat while the rest of his group went for coffee at cafe du monde. . I was pretty moody when he first sat down and I said as much and he said “that’s ok - just put it all in the drawing” so the weariness in the drawing might be more my own, he seemed a bit more calm and light hearted. Close up of a sketch from the other day… my kid was doing Lego’s and then switched to game boy … this is probably 20 minutes or so? Ive had an interesting sensation lately, I’m not entirely sure I can articulate it, I guess it’s connected to aging ? It’s probably the same thing a musician feels towards their instrument after 20 + years. Like half of what’s happening when I’m drawing / painting is somehow in the background, things I’ve tried and gotten, things I’ve tried and failed at, it’s all just here. I think to be an artist is to stare down a paradox- there is an almost prey drive impulse to ‘capture’ something, to cup the whole fleeting world in your palm at least for a second. And sometimes it feels like that - a moment of pure alignment. But everything keeps moving and it becomes very obvious that this world is not meant to be captured.

Anyhow… guess I gotta go to work now to get paper to pay for my life to our corporate overlords !!! lol taken in New Orleans, Louisiana by @namelessart2012

This was a sketch - all drawn from life- of my friend Johnny Mancuso. As I muttered while drawing him “too much character … I can’t get it allll…” also if you know him he can’t sit still for shit. He uncontrollably bursts into Sinatra every 8 minutes. But despite all this he did sit a good long while and I enjoyed the moments and the good weather on the square and trying again to capture things that are simply impossible to capture. by @namelessart2012

I love drawing from life so much. I don’t understand why anyone would ask a machine do that for them or imagine they are having any kind of comparable experience. Humanity seems so lost. by @namelessart2012
