“When in search of your filmmaking fairy godmuthas, don’t look up. Look around you.”

In this Substack essay, I break down how an incredible constellation of creatives came together to make this project happen and what lessons early-career filmmakers can take away from my experience tapping into my community to build the team behind Rainbow Girls.

Woke up to some incredible news! The feature script for RAINBOW GIRLS received an 8/10 overall score on @theblcklst 😆😆😆

Huge thank you to our reader for the incredibly thoughtful feedback, and to @theblcklst for championing stories that may otherwise be overlooked.

@moha @jackson.gravagno @yaelmonae Sowj Kudva and I have been working hard to deliver a feature script for @rainbowgirlsfilm that captures the joy, mischief, and heart of the short, while taking audiences on a satisfying, thrilling ride. To have the work recognized at this stage is deeply encouraging.

🗣️Producers, reps—if you’re looking for a project that’s been described as having “the energy and spirit of films like BABY DRIVER, with the nuanced character work and social commentary of FRUITVALE STATION,” look no further! My inbox is open! 🌈💁🏿‍♀️📜

“What I’ve come to understand is that when two filmmakers independently look at the hyper-gentrification of the Bay Area, the crushing weight of late stage capitalism, and the rebellious art of boosting luxury goods, and decide to make a movie about it – that’s not a case of copycats. That is a cultural distress signal. It means a story is begging to be told.“

Since y’all keep asking!!! 😂 I made a Substack. My first essay explores creative coincidence, dealing with heartbreak in the development process, and why two writers can accidentally tap into the exact same frequency at the exact same time. (SPOILER ALERT: They will inevitably make two very different films, and I hope you watch them both!)

Thanks to @shortoftheweek thousands of you have watched Rainbow Girls in the past few days! If you haven’t yet, visit the link in bio or rainbowgirlsfilm.com to watch the short 🌈

“While the heist provides much of the film’s energy and pleasure, Duffuor also uses the narrative to explore inequalities of wealth and privilege. She infuses her screenplay with perfectly-timed micro-aggressions that gradually push Tati toward transgression. And while watching the Rainbow Girls unapologetically fight against the system is empowering, the film also has a very effective emotional layer. The sense of sisterhood Duffuor depicts, and how communities have to stand together to survive is unexpectedly quite poignant. Her reflection on how San Francisco has changed is handled with subtlety, yet remains undeniable.”
