Happy Birthday to my father, musician and songwriter who began carrying a sketchbook a few years before his untimely death at age fifty. Married as a teenager, with 13 kids, he fed us dreams and never put a roof over our ambitions. And his wisest decision was to marry a strong practical woman who loved him and stayed with him through it all. Happy Birthday to my father— a young fiddler in Western North Carolina who was part of the birth of bluegrass— playing with Reno and Smiley, Jim and Jesse and later with Roy Acuff on a USO tour in Vietnam. Always proud of his Appalachian roots but curious and eager to experience the wider world, he was a songwriter and active in local theater, performed in a Japanese kabuki drama and each year planted a lush garden to feed his 13 children. He died at 50 of heart disease leaving a long legacy of love and myth. I am remembering him especially now as his beloved Asheville and our many relatives there recover from the trauma of a hurricane. In the 1970s, before awareness of climate change, he was concerned about the degradation of the environment due to corporate and personal greed. In his lifetime he had seen the people and the beauty of the mountains used and abused by the lust for profit and in his travels he realized it was a global sickness. He treasured folk culture as well as the culture that wealth supported but greed, he said, would destroy us all. #Ashevillestrong #mountainpeople #silentspring #bluegrassfiddle taken in Franklin, Tennessee by @nancensical

What a lovely surprise to run into a few dear girlfriends at the Frist! Plaster studies by Daniel Chester French for the allegorical figures of Brooklyn and Manhattan that once flanked the entrance to the Manhattan bridge but were moved to the facade of the Brooklyn Museum in 1963. I said hello to the finished sculptures every time I visited the museum. The exhibit at the Frist “Monuments and Myths” featuring French and Augustus Saint-Gaudens also included Saint-Gaudens’ bronze Diana that once graced the old Madison Square Garden. taken in Nashville, Tennessee by @nancensical

Coleus from my garden. Painting a small image of the beautifully patterned leaves was a humbling exercise in a sloppy imitation of an exquisite plant. I’m trying to find a way to paint the natural beauty all around me. Precise detailed replication kills it for me but I haven’t yet mastered the looseness I need to capture the grace I see. More practice needed. #paintingpaintedleaves #coleusbeauty #purpleandgreen #smallpainting taken in Franklin, Tennessee by @nancensical
