POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Barrister Nehemiah Danjuma , who was recently called to bar in Nigeria, is the first deaf lawyer coming out of Northern Nigeria.

How possible is it for a person with a disability to become a lawyer?

Well Nehimiah Danjuma has given a blue print to follow:

1. According to Vanguard Newspaper, In 2017, he sought admission to study law but was given Primary Education Studies, which he refused. The next year he applied for law again and was granted admission.

What is the lesson here: Perseverance. Your dreams are valid. Never believe that you have to give up on your dreams because of your disabilities. Never settle.

2. According to his post on LinkedIn, hard work, sleepless nights, tears, prayers and resilience went into achieving success.

I can attest to the fact that my children with special needs work a lot harder than their peers. Appropriate support systems for individuals with disabilities is non- existent in many parts of Nigeria and poor in others. The terrain is rough but this young barrister has proven that with being resilient will help one forge ahead to achieve their goals.

3. Barrister Nehemiah Danjuma gave his gratitude to his family friends, mentors, as well as organisations that helped to fund his study.

The importance of support systems cannot be overemphasized. The journey to success for a person living with a disability is very hard. Having a shoulder to cry on when it gets too frustrating, people to advise and cheer one on goes a long way. Support for funding is also very important, because aside materials that everyone else is getting, people with disabilities will also need assistive devices like wheel chairs and interpreters and augmentative gadgets.

4. Very importantly, Nehemiah mentioned his fight for accessibility and inclusion during his time in school.

I have always told parents, teachers and therapists that I facilitate that to a large extent, the success of our individuals with special needs depends on our advocacy and insistence for access. Sadly, while our policies talk about access and accommodations, the regulatory and implementation phases of these policies is slow to come into effect.

In this life, just pray to have a supportive family, you will go faaar.

For Onyinye, her family agenda is simple:

1. Love her.

2. Provide for her.

3. Give her all the support she needs.

The secret ingredient for a child with special needs isn't just therapy or money. Sometimes, it's a family that says, “We've got you, all day, everyday!”

We would love to have you dance with Onyinye on December 12th at Unilag.

Register to attend this event and show your support for Onyinye’s journey to independence, and  contribution.

Society needs to pause, look beyond limitations, and begin to see what is possible for individuals with special needs.

People like Toma Unu are living proof of what can happen when talent is given room to grow, opportunities are provided, and society chooses to see possibilities rather than disabilities.

Imagine what more individuals with different support needs could achieve if we stopped making assumptions about what they cannot do and started exploring what they can do!

The question is not just what can these individuals achieve, but what can society do differently to help them thrive?

Let us create opportunities, not barriers. Every ability deserves to be seen, nurtured, and celebrated.

Because every child deserves the opportunity to learn, grow and contribute.

A child who struggles with algebra might light up a room with a piano. So who decided only one of those counts? 🎹

Nancy Omaballa believes education should be measured by what helps a child thrive, not by how many subjects they can survive.

Swipe to hear why 👉

For children with special needs, we must all agree that the teachers and therapists play major roles in the success or otherwise of their learning journeys and how their future is shaped.

But how do we ensure that the different people supporting a child work together to help that child thrive?

There is so much we need to consider from assessment, early intervention, identifying strengths and needs, and creating meaningful learning opportunities, even to making important decisions around school transitions and preparing for adulthood.

Join me and other panelists as we discuss all of these and share our expertise at the RISE Summit tomorrow at The Civic Centre, Lagos Nigeria at 8:00 a.m.

How exactly can a learner be supported, from Cradle to Contribution?

Register and be part of the conversation.

Some moments stay with you.

Tobi, @toyin_od Toyin’s brother, was one of the children I worked with many years ago. He was such a sweet child, navigating the challenges that can sometimes come with being autistic.

Now Tobi is a young man. I see him every once in a while, and something that  always warms my heart is that he remembers me. He always says my name,  looks at me, and gives me that beautiful, warm smile of his, and for a moment, I am taken back to the years we shared working together to develop his speech, communication, functional skills and other areas.

It reminds me that perhaps I left something good behind.

One thing my years of working with autistic children have taught me is that connection matters.Even when a person may not communicate their feelings in the way we expect, they can still remember how we made them feel, they remember the people who were accepting and loving towards them.

So receiving the Best Special Needs Educator Award from Your Safe Space Foundation means so much more to me.

It is a reminder that the work matters. That the little moments matter. That the children we meet along the way may carry moments of our time with them long after we have moved on.

I am deeply honoured, grateful and encouraged to keep doing this work, to keep showing up, keep advocating, keep learning, and keep creating spaces where every child feels seen, valued and understood.

Thank  you, Toyin, Thank you, Your Safe Space NG. Thank you for this Award. by @nancy_of_sen

On September 12th, I had the pleasure of attending a fantastic conference convened by @toyin_od The conference brought attention to an often overlooked aspect of autism and disability advocacy which is the siblings of individuals living with autism and other special needs.

Many advocacy platforms focus on the children living with special needs and their parents, but what happens to the siblings who are often neglected while their parents focus on supporting their loved ones with disabilities? They have to quietly navigate their own emotions, responsibilities, questions and experiences. Toyin reminds us that the voices, needs and experiences of siblings deserve to be seen and heard too.

It is very important for us to note that true inclusion must include the whole family.
Thank you, Toyin, for consistently pushing this
important conversation forward and reminding us to look beyond the obvious and make room for EVERY voice.

@Toyin Odunuyi has a foundation for siblings of neurodivergent individuals called @yoursafespace_ng You can send her a dm to be a part of her very vibrant community.
