While watching the puffins, and the gulls watching the puffins, and the people watching the puffins and the gulls, I heard a different sort of commotion. I went looking for the source.

I zoomed in. Ah. A another resource dispute.

Gull #1: Mine.
Gull #2: Based on what?
Gull #1: I was here first.
Gull #2: That’s not how maritime claims work.
Crab: I feel I should have standing in these negotiations.
Rock: I’ve seen this before.

Seventeen seconds later:

Gull #1: Mine taken in Elliston, Newfoundland and Labrador by @nancykayhay

Well, we made it back to Canada! This time in Winny, leaving Betty ( the ford truck) and cab-over-camper behind. Just missed the fires in Spain and France in July, and now in Santa Fe. Instead, here we in Gros Morne National Park on the west coast of Newfoundland, after a week on Cape Breton Island.

The only way here is by ferry from the north end of Nova Scotia - 8 hours one way, 16 the other. Remote in so many ways, full of friendly, warm people quick to offer help, to make friends. Lots of music and storytelling as well as incredible beauty. And great lobster rolls.

But the history of Maritime Canada, we’ve learned, is full of dark times and deeds, as nationalism, colonialism, great power competition, racism and genocide swept through the various competing peoples that settled the area hundreds of years ago. Seeing the same resilience of the different communities ( indigenous, Gaelic, Acadian to name a few), gives me hope that better days, communities, as well as policies and communications between polarized societies- even oppressed- can emerge from difficult and tragic times. Humans can be as good as they can be awful. A lot of beauty helps.

So, here we are, still looking for moose on the loose, while enjoying great lobster rolls, beautiful skies over the ocean, and new adventures. We’ll be here another 3 weeks- more to come as we head east to Twilingate on the north coast. by @nancykayhay

So grateful for the incredible blessings of this past year- from Easter in Rome with Tim, to my 70th BD dinner with La familia in Lucca, to playing on the beaches in Croatia with Wyatt, hugs, hisses and laughter with Amy Prindle, Grant Hutchings, William and Becca, to more adventures and living with Tim from mountains of Austria, beaches in Greece, our cross-Canada journey, Christmas in mexico, and a 500 mile ride across Spain; all the while treasuring precious moments with mom, sis, and friends…and last but not least, holding baby Emmet this spring and watching him discover the world. What a year !!! One big grand celebration of my 70th sojourn around the sun. Thanks to all in my world for making the past year so spectacular! Here’s to another great year! The slideshow is long, enjoy a grand tour if you are up for vicarious adventures! by @nancykayhay

Week 6 of Tim and Nancy’s sojourn across Canada.

Continuing eastward, We hit peak fall colors in Killarney and Algonquin Provincial Parks (still in Ontario!)! The was perfect.

We got out the bikes and enjoyed ourselves thoroughly. Wanting to honor the local traditions, we even rented a canoe. Zoey wasn’t so sure, but did not jump out- even for the ducks!

Today its raining as the of a cold front pass through. Time to pause, reflect and be Grateful to all the folks along the way that have steered us to these amazing places. These shots are a testament to staying open to hear what others have to say, adapt and celebrate the surprises you find.

Assuming nothing changes, we’ll reach our easternmost destination in Nova Scotia on Canadian Thanksgiving (October 15).

September 30 marked Canada's National Day of Truth and Reconciliation, honoring the First Nation people's heritage. They are remarkably advanced…

We embarked on a walk along an ancient and sacred path in Pukaskwa National Park, situated along the northern headlands of Lake Superior. The day was brilliant from start to finish, culminating in our first glimpse of the Northern Lights! by @nancykayhay

Got our summer culture ( and enlightenment)! We’ve had the pleasure (?!) of seeing Greek tragedy (Antigone, Elektra) performed by Greeks, in Greek, in the eautiful Ancient outdoor theaters of Greece( Epidaurus, Ephesus, Athens). They hold a LOT of people (15000).

Clearly, humankind has not changed much in 2000 + years. Yet we continue to celebrate love, friendship, family and great international cultures and music. The last is a nod to an unexpected opportunity to see the wonderful French duo, AIR, perform to a sold out crowd after we were done touring through the Acropolis at sunset….

Tim and I capped our 2 1/2 months together off seing a quintessential American guy film - the new Brad Pitt Formula 1 racing movie at a little outdoor movie theater in Athens. He deserved some feel-good fun after sitting through a 3 hour production of Antigone wiith me!

Lynn has joined me for the last few weeks of my summer sojourn. We had a much better experience with the production of Elektra- although the message is still hard- justice and mercy, revenge, loyalty, happiness- all ultimately irreconcilable in the face of human greed and ambition. The thought of watching these actors speak these words in the same space where they’ve been spoken for over 2000 years was sobering.

BUt Life goes on- and there’s still beauty and grace. thank goodness! by @nancykayhay
