“Orca Soup” ~ Happy World Orca Day!-The A30's are one of my favourite pods of the northern resident community. These are fish eating only orcas. A72 is an adult female who has a notch on the forward part of her dorsal fin. She has one of the most easily identifiable dorsal fins in the #nrkw community. 🖤🤍🖤 We're lucky that they return to the waters of northern Vancouver Island annually.

Gentle reminder to keep > 25 yard distance from bison. This was taken from a vehicle with a 500mm telephoto lens and then cropped. Bison can weigh up to a ton and are remarkably fast. When they’re in rut it’s probably safe to at least double that distance. There was just an unfavorable event where a male bison chased a man around some trees and eventually threw him approx 10 feet in the air. He’s suffered serious injuries. It appears as if he did everything right, except accidentally crossed paths with a cantankerous bison. We’re all hoping that he’ll make a speedy recovery.

After being hunted to local extinction in the 1920’s, Canada reintroduced 89 Alaskan sea otters in the late 1960’s and the population has naturally expanded ever since. We now have rafts of sea otters just outside of port which are bringing back the vital kelp forest ecosystem. So uplifting and always a special treat to see these cuties.

The red dirt of Madikwe’s Game Reserve makes a striking contrast between the soil, landscape, and plant life. It’s located along the border between South Africa and Botswana adjacent to the Kalahari Desert. The reserve has a rich diversity of wildlife including spotted hyena and helmeted guinea fowl.”
