Persia: “We will darken the sky with our arrows.”
Sparta: “Then we will fight in the shade.”

Watercolor and ink sketch in my Commonplace Book, full of lists, sketches, and quotes.

This quote is from Greek history, the setting and rendering inspired by @BethBrower’s “Unselected Journals of Emma M. Lion”. by @nancymeansgrace

Behold: my process in creating an illuminated card, from border to lettering to painting to gilding and finally to sealing ✨

(I did promise to tag the ink bottle whose cap I used as the stamp for the top layer of my wax seal: shoutout to @ferriswheelpress )

Quietly lettering a bookmark of heavy cotton deckled paper, decorated with a wax seal and gold foil ✨

“And weep not, though the Beautiful decay
Within thy heart, as daily in thine eyes;
Thy heart must have its autumn, its pale skies,
Leading, mayhap, to winter’s dim dismay.
Yet doubt not. Beauty doth not pass away;
Her form departs not, though her body dies.
Secure beneath the earth the snowdrop lies,
Waiting the spring’s young resurrection-day,
Through the kind nurture of the winter cold.
Nor seek thou by vain effort to revive
The summer-time, when roses were alive;
Do thou thy work-be willing to be old:
Thy sorrow is the husk that doth infold
A gorgeous June, for which thou need’st not strive.”

~ George MacDonald, inspiration for C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkien, other Inklings and countless readers before and after by @nancymeansgrace

Very rare, but we do occasionally squeeze in a few painting minutes after a shorter Mediæval History lesson @hlsupstatesc_ by @nancymeansgrace

My watercolor creation lately has been limited to special occasion cards, but I’m not mad about it. Catharsis is catharsis. ✨

I did take a leaf out of @megsandersart’s sketchbook and went for a washed-plaster-look background. She is better at this than I am.

Bonne journée de mariage ! @elliegrahamcamp 🤍🤍

🏆 Y’ALL: Georgian Keyhole desk,

SECRET DRAWER *WITH THE KEYS* 🗝️🗝️

Darling Kim Stegall of @yorick_co @cottagegrovevintage let me in on some of the beautiful secrets behind her gorgeous pieces currently in the shop.

I am not exaggerating when I said I was thinking “how much jewelry do I need to sell to get this desk?”

How completely charming, and the secret key drawer with the keys was the cherry on the icing on the cake 🎂 😘 by @nancymeansgrace

“I cannot comprehend the neglect of a family library in such days as these.” ~ Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy, Pride and Prejudice 🎩

Although most of our family library is now on our main floor in variously well-to-poorly-curated bookshelves of all sorts, the big downstairs room has traditionally been our library and we still call it “the Library“.

However, in my little medieval art room off the Library I found that I could not do without a few books, and as you can see… the few necessary books have… aahhh… expanded.

Any of these unknown to you? 🤷‍♀️

Can you guess which is my favorite (or at least top three)? 🤭 by @nancymeansgrace
