Work in progress trying to recreate the visuals of The Return of Obra Dinn entirely with code (shaders?).

Got really ambitious about this after reading Lucas Pope’s forum posts about how he created Obra Dinn. I worked on 4 algorithms from scratch, one involving computer vision in a way that was completely new to me. There is edge detection, 2 styles of dithering (bayer and blue noise), and then motion detection to decide what is a background and what is an object to apply the right style of dithering. Motion detection is not the best to apply here, but it’s the most accurate without depth data I found (I didn’t want to have to tune a lot for every different input video).
There are a few other options, but none that would make a satisfactory difference given the input is 2D video. To really give it the Lucas Pope effect, it would need some stable dithering (@runevision on YouTube explains this).

I’ll probably work on this a bit more later but I need to move on. Full senddddd

Saw a beer can design from @biereshorizon at @lepetitdep the other day that I thought was adorable. Started playing around with something inspired by it! I would upload the inspiration can but ig keeps messing with the aspect ratio of everything as soon as you try to upload multiple things. #genart #algorithmicart #womenwhocode #digitalart #codeart #processing #p5js #lineart #craftbeer #dep #genartclub #javascript #java #programming by @nanunalab

Life in ASCII, it’s fantastic!!

this had to be a self-portrait for @creativecodeart so just fyi I’m just as embarrassed by me dancing as you are.

Summer Barbie mode peaking through the dark techno persona. Chronically digital. Always the dancing DJ. Why be one when you can be all? Created using processing.

Based on the principles of chladni’s patterns. Each object has a frequency which it resonates with (usually you can tell by which frequency makes the object rattle). If you put some sand or salt on an object, vibrations from a resonant frequency will create interesting patterns on the surface. The classic experiment is done with salt on a steel/metal plate.

I couldn’t try this myself at home (would have to blast the subwoofers and didn’t feel like losing my hearing) so I created a digital version!

Here, the “plate” is programmed to share similar characteristics as a steel sheet so only resonant frequencies for that material are shown. It is triggered by the beat of the track and a pattern for the highest frequency in that moment is generated. This way it looks more in sync with the music and is more enjoyable to watch. Sound is sampled for beat detection and frequency in this at 1/80th of a second but playing around with this changes the accuracy of the algorithm. I’ll probably upload more examples of this because different sounds create different animations!

here's one i created with @ciel_dj 's new vinyl EP, Ecstatic Editions Vol. 1, in mind. The colours, obviously. But the sense of traditional elements with a fearless exploration of new soundscapes is enthralling. I suppose these fresh sounds pressed to vinyl is also a blend of older and newer worlds (digital art vs. tangible). She's also all about evolution and growth and that brought me to this...

It brought to mind the harmonograph. A device that is credited with creating the first pieces of art by machine. It basically moves on two axis, creating a double pendulum effect. Add a pen to it, and you get some beautiful patterns called harmonograms! Using code and algorithms to bring this historical form of creativity to digital felt like an interesting way to represent Ciel's new EP, her skill in making simplicity beautiful, and the idea of embracing change!
