🐈STARTER VILLAIN💣

My first John Scalzi and I’m … sort of impressed? I really love the concept and the more I read, the more I was drawn in but I really had hoped I found something more engaging about the story sooner than about 60% of the way through. That being said, I still wanted to pick this up and find an extra 10 minutes here and there to get back to it, so a solid 3⭐️. Plus, there are cats! Typing cats!

🛡️BRIGANDS & BREADKNIVES🔪
It’s finally cold so the cosy fantasy books are OUT! Travis Baldree books are always an instant favourite for me and so far this hasn’t disappointed. I’m about 50% of the way through and my favourite character is a talking bread knife, I’m all over that vibe ✨

Cosy fantasy, cosy romance and cosy mysteries are what this season is all about so hit me up with your recs!

❄YOU'RE OVERTHINKING THIS🔪
.
Okay, this one had me questioning EVERYTHING!
.
I really enjoyed the tension between Hailey and Cameron. There’s this constant feeling that something isn’t quite right between them, and I was so invested in trying to work out what was actually going on.
.
I’m saying absolutely nothing about this one because I think going in without knowing too much is the way to go, but there are twists pretty much at every turn. Every time I thought I had figured something out, another little reveal came along and made me question everything all over again.
.
I also really loved Diana Urban’s writing. I'm a huge fan of her YA novels and her debut into adult fiction is no different. It’s so easy to get completely sucked into the story, and the way everything keeps unfolding made this such a quick and addictive read for me. I definitely had that “just one more chapter” feeling more than once!
.
A really twisty, tense read that kept me guessing and made me very glad I didn’t try too hard to overthink it… despite the title 😂

I rarely read a book as soon as it hits the doormat, but when it’s Poe and Tilly you best believe I’m dropping everything to get stuck in!
.
.
As per usual, Poe and Tilly land themselves in a dangerous case full of deception and danger, only this time round they’re free of the constraints of the NCA so you best believe it gets messy. Absolutely whizzed through this one alongside @ems_reading.life so we could be equally grossed out and entranced by the unfolding mystery 👀✨ Super bummed we know have to wait for the next one 🫠

💀HOW TO BE DEAD🪦
One day, your dad will pop over and ask if you want to read a set of books he finished. Say yes 🙌

🛣️MURDER ROAD🔪
This took a little while to get going, but once it did, I was hooked. The eerie atmosphere, slow-building suspense, and subtle supernatural twists made for a really engaging read. Simone St. James does a great job mixing mystery with ghost story vibes, and the characters felt real and relatable. If you’re into creepy, slow-burn thrillers, definitely give this one a shot — just be patient with the beginning!👻

.
Also - how amazing is this edition?! I bought it in the Illumicrate sale and I definitely don’t regret it!

🏠HOW TO SELL A HAUNTED HOUSE👻
Welcome to Spooky Season! 🕷️ If you're in the mood for a read that's both chilling and emotional, How to Sell a Haunted House by Grady Hendrix is a must-read. 📖
.
.
.
This book is a masterful mix of family drama, creepy atmosphere, and haunting horror that'll linger long after you've closed the book. Hendrix skillfully balances scares with heart, making this a terrifying and touching read. 💀
.
.
.
Perfect for cozying up on dark autumn nights with a cup of hot chocolate and a few goosebumps. ☕️
.
(PS. Listening to the audiobook takes the spookiness to a whole new level - definitely recommend! Borrowing it from the library is even better if you can!)

🧈BUTTER🦃
Okay… I really thought this one was going to blow me away after all the hype, but honestly it just didn’t land for me 😕. The writing felt super dry and bland, and not much actually happens throughout the book. It dragged so much that it literally took me 4 months to finish because I just couldn’t stay invested.
The premise had so much potential, but overall it felt overhyped and kind of forgettable. Definitely not the rich, gripping read I was hoping for.

Have you read this one? Did you feel differently? 👀

🩵ORDINARY LOVE🩷
I absolutely loved Ordinary Love. It’s the kind of book that quietly gets under your skin and stays with you. Marie Rutkoski has such a gift for capturing the emotional complexity of everyday life—especially when it comes to love, regret, and figuring out who you are outside of your relationships.

Emily, the main character, is one of the most relatable protagonists I’ve read in a while. She’s messy, introspective, smart, and trying her best to navigate a life that didn’t go exactly as planned. I appreciated how honest and vulnerable she felt on the page—her doubts, her hopes, her attempts at reconnection, all of it. You can’t help but root for her, even when she’s unsure of herself.

The writing is quietly stunning, with lines that just stop you in your tracks because they’re so emotionally true. It’s not flashy or plot-heavy, but it doesn’t need to be. The power is in the subtle details and the emotional depth Rutkoski brings to each scene.

If you love books that are thoughtful, character-driven, and deeply human, Ordinary Love is a must-read. Emily’s story is one that will stay with me for a long time ❣️
