The Sound of Naoshima by Sanitas Pradittasnee — really quite a stunning stupa-like structure (its outside covered in layered of mirror made using an old Thai technique, apparently) — newly installed on the forested hillside leading up to the Naoshima New Museum, in June. Next time you visit Naoshima, consider coming via Kagawa/Takamatsu side, so you can shoot out to the Mt Yashima area and experience Shikoku Mura (Shikoku Village).

This is a fantastic mountainside — nice and cool and breezy since it’s slightly up above the now August-level-hot lowlands of coastal Kagawa— to where they have relocated various centuries old houses and other old buildings that served crafts/agricultural purposes, from various parts of Shikoku. These structures are beautifully spaced and nestle into the landscape— which includes bamboo groves, a rural Kabuki stage from Shidoshima, and lovely twisting huge stone pathways leading to simple but striking fountains & waterfalls (created by sculptor Nagare Masayuki), then on to an Ando built museum (w/a Rodin, some great Inokuma paintings + more), then to a teahouse occupying a Meiji era Victorian house (異人館) relocated from Kobe! And more, but you can discover on your own when you go. Incidentally, I had most of the place completely to myself (!) on a Monday afternoon and was spellbound by the beauty of the place. I also came away knowing loads more about crafts and industries that have flourished in Shikoku —shoyu production, washi paper making, sugar cane production etc— having taken a few minutes in several spots to watch the excellently produced videos and read the info on each site (all translated via QR code link into many different languages).

i will be going back soon. I can say this with confidence as Ono and I have just bought tickets to see Kodo perform live at Shikoku Mura in October!
