This October, we are proud to recognize Christine Wells-Wonsley as an honoree at NAPAWF's 30th anniversary event in Los Angeles.

Christine is the mother of Nolan Wells, an 18-year-old Black and Filipino American young man whose death has left his family grieving and searching for answers. A Black and Filipina nurse practitioner who has spent her career caring for others, Christine is now demonstrating immense courage and determination as she advocates for her own family and calls for a transparent investigation.

Our organization was founded to ensure AANHPI women have the power to advocate for themselves, their families, and their communities. We are honored to uplift Christine as she embodies this mission and continues to fight for Nolan.

Our recent report, “Beyond the Labels,” asks AAPI women across ethnicities their thoughts on abortion care – who, how, when, and where they should get it. The majority of AAPI women support abortion access without shame, stigma, or political interference.

Today is the 50th anniversary of the passage of the Hyde Amendment, a law that prohibits the use of federal funds for abortion, with narrow exceptions.

This rule is a violation of our reproductive freedoms and has been deeply harmful to AANHPI women+. It’s critical that we overturn the Hyde Amendment, which is exactly what the EACH Act would do.

Check if your Member of Congress is already a cosponsor of the EACH Act on Congress.gov. If not, ask them to support the the bill! We have an opportunity to put and end to the Hyde Amendment with the EACH Act! In just one week we’ll be honoring Christine Wells-Wonsley at our 30th Anniversary event on October 3rd. Christine is the mother of Nolan Wells, an 18-year-old Black and Filipino American young man whose family has been seeking transparency around his passing. Even as they navigate immense grief, Christine and her family have not stopped fighting for answers.

Joining Christine will be nationally renowned civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who represents the Wells-Wonsley family and has been instrumental in ongoing legal and advocacy efforts. For decades, Crump has represented families and communities in consequential civil rights cases, bringing national attention to issues of injustice.

This week, our Communications Manager, Lasamee Kettavong, and our Senior Organizing Manager, May Thach, attended a screening of @dreamworks @forgottenislandmovie. At the event, May spoke about how the film, which tells the story of two Filipina teenagers and best friends who find a portal to a magical world, and must endeavor to get home without losing their memories, reflects a foundational aspect of NAPAWF’s mission: that it’s the power of love and friendship that makes our work sustainable. It’s what’s fueled the last 30 years of power building for and with AANHPI women and gender expansive people. It’s the heart of our movement.

We’re excited to announce that @rtajimapena will be attending our 30th Anniversary Celebration on October 3rd as a guest and presenter to our honoree Christine Wells-Wonsley.

Renee is an Academy Award-nominated filmmaker and a founding member of the Center for Asian American Media and Asian American Documentary Network, paving the way for generations of AANHPI filmmakers and storytellers.

Her landmark documentary Who Killed Vincent Chin? brought national attention to Vincent’s murder and his mother Lily Chin’s fight for justice. Renee will help connect that history to the present as we honor Christine, whose family continues to seek answers around the death of her son, Nolan Wells.

What support or information would make health care, work, housing, and other systems easier to navigate? Share your experiences to help AAPD build a new program that better meets your needs.

AAPD especially welcome perspectives from communities of color and immigrant communities–and that includes AANHPI communities. It’s critical we make our voices heard to create systems that work for us!

Today is NHPI Women's Equal Pay Day which marks how far into this year NHPI women must work to catch up to what white, non-Hispanic men earned last year.

NHPI women overall are paid just 67¢ for every $1 paid to white, non-Hispanic men. But disaggregating the data reveals even wider gaps for many NHPI communities, with some women losing hundreds of thousands, and in some cases millions, of dollars over the course of their careers.

Today, we're calling on policymakers to disaggregate the data, enforce equal pay, and strengthen worker protections.
