“I MELT WITH YOU speaks to the intimacy of painting, to the sense of entering into a dance with the work as it unfolds. There is a constant exchange between intention and surrender, between what I bring to the canvas and what the painting seems to ask of me. I often rotate a painting as I work, looking for another way in, a different reading or an unexpected intervention. Turning it can shift everything, revealing relationships I hadn’t noticed or opening up possibilities that were previously hidden. I want the painting to resist becoming too familiar, to keep me on my toes….” - Fran O’Neill I melt with you, 2025 Oil on canvas 142 x 183 cm Fran O’Neill: Closer, Still

“Moon Song comes from a place of remembering, of feeling the soft call of someone who is no longer here, yet remains present in ways that are difficult to explain. It was a complicated relationship, one that held its own contradictions, but also left me with things I continue to carry and understand through time. I am interested in how people remain with us, how their influence settles into the spaces between memory and feeling, sometimes emerging unexpectedly, like a familiar song heard from somewhere in the distance. Perhaps this painting is a way of sitting with that tenderness, allowing what has passed to find its own place in the present, without needing to resolve everything that came before. There is something about knowing someone, yet never fully knowing them at all. A reverence for all the facets of a person, for what is revealed and what remains hidden, and for the way a painting, too, can hold its secrets, allowing the unknowable to exist without ever needing to be explained.” Fran O’Neill Fran O’Neill moon song, 2025 Oil on canvas 180 x 180 cm Fran O’Neill: Closer, Still

56x72” (142x183cm) oil on canvas 2026 #franoneill by @narf1771
The second of my favourites, as promised. The Russian abstract painter Wassily Kandinsky was a synaesthete. He heard colour and saw sound, and painted as if the two were one sense. Fran O’Neill’s painting, ‘groove is in the heart’, does the same to me. Rainbows break over the top edge and riders on horseback seem to rise over a hill. Great swirls of paint carry the twist of a body mid-dance. Hot magenta runs beside cool grey, sweet pink against sour ochre, silk against grit, a loud fanfare of pigment that settles the longer you stand with it. The title is borrowed from Deee-Lite’s 1990 dance-floor anthem, and you can almost hear the bassline in it. If my other favourite, ‘so much more than this’, takes a Renaissance painting apart, this one puts the music back in. Fran O’Neill

For Fran O’Neill, painting is a process of intense focus, instinct and control. What might appear loose and spontaneous is, in fact, a considered negotiation with each canvas, allowing every work to find its own unique resolution. Fran O’Neill: Closer, Still

Living with paintings… #franoneill by @narf1771
Up close, the serpentine sweeps catch and shimmer. Unlikely colours meet and settle. Closer, Still gathers three years of Fran O’Neill’s work made in Cheshunt, Victoria. Paintings to live with and meet again as the light shifts. Fran O’Neill: Closer, Still

New York artist and critic Thomas Micchelli on Fran O’Neill’s paintings: “O’Neill’s blunt, tough-minded, ecstatically convulsive oil paintings are endlessly revealing: pigment and binder, solvent and surface fuse and split, continuously reconfigured under the constant pressure of the artist’s agitated eye and restless hand. The colors cling to the picture plane even as the translucent fields they inhabit come apart, unveiling the depths of space churning below.” Come closer, and stand still. These paintings deserve you in the room. Fran O’Neill: Closer, Still
