Earlier this year, we launched something we’d been working toward for years: the new Narrative Muse Audience Analytics Platform. 🎉

We started small—manually creating reports that took 7–10 days each, so we could learn directly from creators about what they actually needed. Then we automated, iterated, hit a few walls (okay, a lot of walls 😅), and ultimately built a platform that puts powerful audience insights directly in creators’ hands.

Now creators can run reports themselves, at a much lower cost, and use the data to experiment, iterate, and better understand who’s looking for stories like theirs.

We’re incredibly proud of how far we’ve come — and we’re just getting started. 🚀

Are algorithms helping us discover what we actually want, or just more of what we’ve already seen? 👀📚

The 2026 NetGalley Community Survey, based on nearly 12,000 publishing professionals, booksellers, librarians, educators, and reviewers, highlights growing algorithm fatigue in book discovery.

Readers are tired of endless loops of familiar recommendations, trending tropes, and engagement-driven labels. They want something more human: intentional discovery based on what they’re actually looking for.

That’s the idea behind Narrative Muse. We ask readers directly about their interests and connect them with stories based on genuine fit, not just past clicks or popularity.

Taste evolves. Curiosity matters. And sometimes the best recommendation is the book you never knew you were looking for.

With around 1.3 billion people worldwide living with a disability, disabled people make up one of the largest and most diverse communities in the world.

Yet disability remains one of the most underrepresented identities across books, film, and television.

Representation matters to Narrative Muse. And not just seeing disabled characters on screen or in the pages of a book, but seeing them portrayed as complex, fully realized people—beyond tired tropes like the tragic victim, inspirational hero, miraculous cure, or villain.

And authentic representation starts with inclusion behind the scenes, too. When disabled writers, actors, consultants, and creators have a seat at the table, stories become richer, more nuanced, and more authentic.

Because disability is part of human diversity. And when everyone gets to tell their stories, it just makes for better storytelling.

To check out more about our celebration of Disability this year, and get some of our top book and screen recommendations, read the whole article at: https://medium.com/narrative-muse/amazing-stories-by-disabled-creatives-13d99553ab6f

With this year's Oscars in the rearview mirror, we're adding to the annual discussion of whether awards and their big, flashy broadcasts have outlived their relevance.

It seems that the whole world is aware of a disconnect between audiences and awards, but why is this, and what can be done about it?

At Narrative Muse, we think it comes down to something very near and dear to us...the concept of discovery.

In decades past, nominees lists and awards show broadcasts were tools to find new films and shows to watch. Being charmed by stars on the red carpet had people buying tickets to the cinema. Resonating with creators’ acceptance speeches had them setting their VCRs to record.

These days, however, user-generated review and recommendation platforms (ahem, Narrative Muse!), influencer-stocked social media feeds, and 24-hour online news cycles do far more for discovery than awards shows.

Here's our round-up of this month's freshest finds:

🌱 Beloved
By Toni Morrison

Morrison’s stunning writing shows up multiple times on lists of the most banned books, and Pulitzer Prize-winning Beloved is absolutely one of our favorites. It tells the heart-wrenching story of Sethe, who was born enslaved and escaped, but is haunted by memories and the ghost of her baby. Morrison’s The Bluest Eye and Song of Solomon also regularly feature on banned books lists.

🌻 Last Night at the Telegraph Club
by Malinda Lo

This NYTimes bestselling, National Book Award-winning novel is set in 1954, at the height of the Red Scare, when 17-year-old Lily Hu visits a lesbian bar called the Telegraph Club.

💛 Milk and Honey
by Rupi Kaur

Kaur’s #1 New York Times bestselling collection of poetry and prose about survival is potent but accessible, as it delves into the experience of violence, abuse, love, loss, and femininity. milk and honey is a special kind of poetry book, one that is for both poetry lovers and for those who feel intimidated by the idea of diving into a poetry collection.

💥 Slaughterhouse-Five
by Kurt Vonnegut

Widely considered one of the best American novels of all time, this anti-war story centers on the infamous World War II firebombing of Dresden and draws from what Vonnegut saw as a prisoner of war. Ironically, one of this banned book’s main messages is the ways we as a society keep making the same mistakes, in spite of the fact that it doesn’t have to be that way.

🪴 Sold
by Patricia McCormick

National Book Award finalist Sold tells the story of Lakshmi, a 13-year-old girl in Nepal who is sold into prostitution. It’s a powerful, poignant, bestselling novel that “gives voice to a young girl robbed of her childhood yet determined to find the strength to triumph.” A writer and journalist, McCormick relies heavily on research and interviews when she tells stories. For Sold, she not only travelled to the brothels of India and the villages of Nepal to interview trafficking survivors, she also drew from her own experiences of sexual abuse. by @narrative.muse

December has its own rhythm—a quiet brightness, a sense of looking back and looking forward all at once. ✨

It’s the perfect time to settle into stories that feel meaningful, powerful, and beautifully made by women, gender-queer creators, and Indigenous storytellers.

Here are a few to close out your year with intention:

🎬 Sweet As (dir. Jub Clerc) – A coming-of-age Australian film from Nyul Nyul/Yawuru writer-director Jub Clerc; warm, honest, and full of heart.
📺 Moana (created by Ron Clements, John Musker, with significant Māori & Pasifika creative leadership) – A vibrant, resonant story empowered by Indigenous artists and advisors.
📖 Song of the Crocodile by Nardi Simpson – A lush, lyrical novel by a Yuwaalaraay author; equal parts storytelling, memory, and land.
🎬 The Water Diviner’s Daughter (dir. Hōhepa Waitoa) – A visually stunning short film rooted in Māori mythology and identity.

As the year winds down, let these stories meet you wherever you find yourself—resting, reflecting, or readying for what comes next.

Some stories don’t just soothe, they settle into you.

When users personalize their Narrative Muse preferences, many are drawn to a “meditative” tone. But what makes something truly soothing?

To us, a meditative tone is:
🍃 Calm – A gentle exhale that slows the world down
🌊 Reflective – Moments that invite you inward, asking you to listen deeply
✨ Centering – Grounded in presence, stillness, and quiet truth
🕊️ Restorative – Stories that soften the mind and steady the heart

These are the stories that linger like a breath held between thoughts—simple, tender, and profoundly human.

So how does Narrative Muse find them for you?

Share a little about yourself—what comforts you, what brings you peace—and our tech will match you with stories by, for, and about diverse cultures and identities.

Ready to soften into your next story?
Set your preferences at narrativemuse.com and see what brings you calm.
