“With #Zuri, we wanted to see the wild through a different lens. Inspired by our fascination with Matisse’s monochromatic works, we stripped the Safari of its expected colour and let ink, ivory and soft neutrals take over. Wandering brushstrokes, wild spots and geometric fragments found their way into the composition, each with a character of its own. Four artworks eventually came together as one ever-evolving composition, creating a Safari that feels instinctive, graphic and a little unexpected.” ~ Shivan & Narresh

When Shivan Bhatiya (@shivanbhatiya) and Narresh Kukreja (@narresh) launched their label in 2010, Indian fashion was expanding into new lifestyle categories, while luxury swimwear and holiday dressing still sat at the edges of the designer conversation.

Their proposition was colour-blocked swimwear, resortwear that celebrated the silhouette, and the bikini sari, a garment attuned to both fantasy and the evolving Indian wardrobe.

Sixteen years later, Shivan & Narresh has stretched leisure into occasion wear, cruise wear, après-ski, home, accessories and objects, turning a category into a worldview.

For The Established’s latest episode of In The Studio, the designers opened the doors to their Gurugram headquarters. Across four floors, design, the leather atelier, embroidery, merchandising, marketing, production and finishing sit in close conversation. Ideas move quickly from sketch to swatch, moodboard to garment rack.

It begins as a dialogue between restraint and exuberance, precision and play, minimalism and maximalism..

Matisse Series is born from that very exchange. For years, we’ve admired works of Henri Matisse, drawn to his fearless use of colour, his childlike sense of wonder and the effortless freedom that defines his art. There is a sense of joy and spontaneity in his world that felt deeply familiar to ours..

The story becomes more personal with Matisse, our beloved dog 🐕 & companion of over a decade, whose name quietly inspired this collection and whose spirit of curiosity and delight echoes throughout it.

While Shivan finds beauty in nuance, detail and the poetry of less, I (Narresh) love embracing the abundance of colour and a life lived in technicolour. Yet a collection is never a reflection of one perspective alone. . It is the coming together of two distinct sensibilities to create something entirely new.

The Matisse Series this summer celebrates that shared vision. .because in the end, what emerges is neither Shivan nor Narresh, but something that could only ever be SHIVAN & NARRESH.
