I’m thrilled to share that I’ve been featured on @topmate.io as one of the Top Software Mentors in the US!

This recognition means the world to me because mentoring is one of the most rewarding parts of my journey as a software engineer.

Helping others navigate their way through the tech world, especially when it feels overwhelming, has always been a passion of mine.

To all the newcomers stepping into the world of software engineering, here are a few things I wish someone had told me early on:

✔ Start with the basics, but don’t stop there. Master foundational skills, then keep building on them.

✔ Ask questions. Even the best engineers were once beginners. Never be afraid to admit you don’t know something.

✔ Keep learning. The tech world moves fast, but curiosity will keep you ahead of the curve.

✔ Build relationships. Your network can be as important as your skills. Seek mentors, collaborate with peers, and grow together.

And most importantly: Don’t give up.

It’s okay to feel lost sometimes, but trust me, persistence pays off.

To everyone who's been part of my journey—thank you! 💙

And to all the mentees I’ve had the honor of working with, keep pushing you’re capable of amazing things!

Here’s to more growth, learning, and mentoring in 2025!

Go check out the full list and find me and shout-out to the other mentors:

From Homelessness to Software Engineer at Oracle: My Journey

Hey everyone! I'm 👋🏾Faith, also known as Nasara 404.

I’m a software engineer at Oracle, and my journey into tech was far from typical.

I started out wanting to be a vet, focusing on research in math, biophysics, and engineering.

But my life took a turn when I accidentally joined an art programming class.

I was the only one without coding skills, and that challenge sparked something in me.

My passion for coding deepened during one of the most challenging periods of my life.

In college, I struggled with not having a stable place to live for months.

With no money for food, I lived on @7eleven discounts and the kindness of strangers, specifically a @pizzabolis employee who gave me his pizza.

That’s when I decided to leave research behind.

And coding became my way to survive, put food on the table, and find my path forward.

I believe coding can build generational wealth, especially in communities that often lack it.

That’s why I’m passionate about helping others find their place in tech.

Throughout my career, I worked with ColorStack, talking on panels and mentoring students.

I had the chance to join programs at Twitter and Jane Street.

At Oracle, I led my team’s projects like the canary core reduction effort.

I also studied A.I. at MIT PE during this time.

Last year, I faced a major setback when I was in a serious car accident.

With Autism, it was even harder to get back on track.

But my managers’ support helped me push through and regain my strength.

My journey had a lot of ups and downs, but if I could make it, so can you.

If you're just starting in tech, remember, every challenge is a step forward.

Just keep going!

Sometimes she just wants to go out to eat. And not just any food, some fresh Hawaiian food will do.

On the beach? Even better.

‘Each one should test their own actions. Then they can take pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to someone else’
Galatians 6:4

If you see every one of your friends with cars and jobs and children and houses and businesses and a seemingly a better life than you, you have faulted in that exact line of thinking.

I got my car and license at such a late age that I thought I was doing something wrong. But I always grew up as the late bloomer. The one who always took too long to accomplish something or do something.

Now I say all that to say, so what? As long you get what you worked for, there is no need to compare yourself to others.

We weren’t supposed to find each other, but we did.

In a city alive with sound and innovation, a few of us crossed paths at a tech conference in Atlanta.

Different states, different countries, different stories, but the same rhythm: melanated, brilliant, and often unseen in these spaces.

We shared laughs between sessions, swapped ideas over vegan burgers, and reminded each other that visibility matters.

That being the only one in the room doesn’t mean you’re alone; it means you’re a bridge for someone coming after you.

Networking wasn’t about opportunity this time.

It was about alignment, purpose, and realizing how powerful we are when we find each other.

Black in tech. Not just present, rooted.

There are moments when YAH whispers, “Go.”
Not out of anger, not out of loss, but because the season has finished speaking.

So I walked. Not far, just far enough to feel the salt touch my skin and the air shift around me.
The sea didn’t ask for my plans, it only mirrored my faith.
Rain walked beside me, unbothered, curious, free,
a reminder that even small steps count when they’re led by peace.

Sometimes YAH will separate you from the noise so you can hear His rhythm again.
The waves become prophets,
the breeze becomes prayer,
and your stillness becomes obedience.

Lot was told to leave too, not to understand, but to obey.
His wife looked back and turned to salt,
proof that what’s behind us can harden us if we refuse to move forward and not obedient.

I didn’t come to be found.
I came to remember,
that leaving isn’t losing.
It’s trusting that what’s meant for you will meet you on the next shore. 🌊🐾
