I like to sign the marriage license in the down time before the wedding starts. No one else needs to sign it. The couple signs it when they pick it up and while there is room for a witness, it increases the chances of mistakes and having to start over so I don’t usually let anyone else sign it. I mail it for you and give you the souvenir copy if there is one. Otherwise, you can get official copies from the county clerk about three weeks after the wedding. by @nashvows

You can’t beat this dance floor set up at Mint Springs Farm. Such a vibe!

I'm the guy in the background. I always step out of the way for big moments like the kiss and I'm off to the side as you go back down the aisle. Not only is it too intimate of a moment to be the guy standing that close, but I shouldn't be the main thing in your pictures. by @nashvows

Seven lines. One promise. Over the last few weeks we've unpacked every line of the traditional wedding vow: to have and to hold, for better or worse, for richer or poorer, in sickness and health, to love and cherish, as long as we both shall live.

These vows aren't just words for your wedding day, they're the constitution for your whole marriage. Revisit them. Recommit when you fall short. That's how you build a life-giving marriage instead of just a wedding day.

If you want help writing your own vows or preparing for marriage (not just the wedding), that's what I do. Link in bio. And tell me: which line from this series hit you hardest?

"As long as we both shall live." I like this version better than "til death do us part," partly for the modern ear, mostly because I don't love talking about death at a wedding. But we all die, so let's be honest about it.

Some couples try to swap in "forever and ever." I'd gently push back. You can't keep a promise you have no power to keep. And there's actually mercy in this line: when a spouse dies, the one left behind hasn't broken their vow by loving again. Death parts you. The promise was already kept.

This is the line that gives every other line in the vow its weight.

"To love and to cherish." Some versions of the vows drop this line. I think it's one of the most important ones.

To cherish someone is to prioritize and protect them, to treat them like something valuable. Four simple ways to do that: say thank you out loud, protect real quality time, actually listen instead of waiting to respond, and surprise them with something small and specific. No grand gestures required, just consistency.

Which of these four are you already good at? Which one needs some work?

"In sickness and in health." We are perishable people in a fallen world. However wonderful your partner is today, their body will eventually break down. You're signing up for this, whether the wedding day mentions it soberly or not.

I've watched this vow lived out up close, by my own parents, and by my wife caring for me. It asks two things of you: take your own health seriously, for both your sakes, and actually show up, emotionally, not just logistically, when it's their turn to need you.

Tag someone who's shown you what this vow looks like in real life.

"For richer or for poorer." I've had couples ad-lib their vows live and say "for rich or richer" instead. I hope they stay that way. But hope isn't a financial plan.

A budget is where this vow gets real: every debt, every dollar, every hope, written down together. When you marry someone, you marry their financial habits too. Money is one of the top three fights in marriage, so have the conversation now, not mid-fight later.

What's one money question you wish someone had made you answer before your wedding?

"For better or for worse." Every couple says it. Almost nobody plans for the "worse" part to actually show up.

Here's the thing: "worse" isn't only tragedy you couldn't see coming. Sometimes it's just your person, the parts of them they haven't shown you yet, or haven't fully seen in themselves. No one is marrying someone perfect. Denial doesn't help. Forgiveness and acceptance does.

If you're marrying someone "for their potential," let's talk before the wedding, not after.

"To have and to hold from this day forward" honestly, this is why I got into marriage. But having and holding someone for 40 years takes more than chemistry.

This line covers both intimacy and exclusivity, and it only works if you actually talk about your expectations. How often, what it looks like in hard seasons, how you ask for and give permission none of it is unromantic. It's just necessary.

Married folks: what's one thing you wish you'd talked about before the wedding?

"I take you to be my ___." Fill in the blank, and your relationship changes forever. Not dating anymore. Not even engaged. One.

Here's what I tell every couple before they say this line: it's a choice you're making, on purpose, out of everyone you could have chosen. And it's unconditional -- no "if," no "as long as." That's what makes it a vow instead of a preference.

Which part of this line lands hardest for you?
