Meet the cohort @nasibahafiz

“My name is Nasiba Hafiz, and I associate myself with the bougainvillea, جهنمية.

I am named after my mother, and we share our name with the warrior Nusaybah bint Ka’ab, who fought alongside the Prophet Muhammad عليه الصلاة والسلام. It is said that she lost her arm in battle.

I love the bougainvillea because I once read that it is a climate warrior. Its thorny vines are seen by some as a form of protection, while others joke about its hellish name, جهنمية, which stands in such striking contrast to its beauty.

In some regional dialects, the plant is also known as مريمية (Maryamiyya), a name that evokes the Virgin Mary and associations of purity. I am drawn to this duality: a plant that is both thorny and beautiful, protective and delicate, its name carrying the suggestion of hell while its flowers offer something close to grace. “
