A year into the rebrand of TN Magazine, we’ve had the privilege of putting some phenomenal people on our covers.

We launched the new title with Hend Sabry. Since then, we’ve profiled Abeer Nehme, Mohamed Ahmed Ibrahim, Sarah Taibah, Yasmina El Abd, Manuel Rabaté, Nada Debs, Hashel Al Lamki and Saba Mubarak.

For September, we headed back to Lebanon to shoot actress and singer Stephanie Atala among the rocky hills of Faitroun.

I first met Stephanie more than a decade ago through a production company I was involved with in Beirut. It sounds like the kind of apocryphal story that gets retrofitted once someone becomes successful, but I promise it isn’t: even then, I could tell there was something different about her. She had the makings of a star.

On a breezy August day in Faitroun, photographer Mohamad Al-Rifai asked if she was comfortable climbing onto the edge of a cliff for a shot. Stephanie surveyed the options — then suggested an even more precarious perch that would make a better picture.

It was a pleasure working on this shoot with Stephanie, the incredibly talented @ri_fo and my all-time favourite production team, @samerfl_ and @1505studio.

And thank you to our partners at @prada for trusting us with the shoot. I think it meant something special to everyone involved to make it in Lebanon, right now.

The first image was taken by mistake by a stranger inside Fujiko Nakaya’s fog sculpture within the Bourse de Commerce rotunda. Once she saw the picture on her camera roll, she felt compelled to come up to Nour and insist on sending it to us. It might be one of my favourite pictures of us as a family. That interaction pretty much sums up the last 10 days of catching up on Paris, a city both Nour and I have called home at times in our life. Now we have a tiny +1 to introduce to all the fun. by @nasri.atallah

My favourite profiles are the ones where the subject discovers something about themselves in the conversation. That moment arrives towards the end of @whmullally’s profile of our TN Magazine summer cover star, @sabamubarak.

One of the Arab world’s most recognisable actors, Mubarak has built a celebrated career across film and television. But her story began with art. At home, her mother – celebrated Palestinian artist and poet Hanan Al-Agha – surrounded her with it.

While Mubarak harboured thoughts of becoming a painter herself, she left that world behind when acting found her.

It is a part of herself that she lost connection with after her mother died in 2008. “Maybe I was trying to go away from that for the longest time because it reminds me so much of my mother,” she tells William. “Maybe it was a way of separating myself, of taming that missing, that void. Maybe I am just analysing now with you, but I never thought about it before. Why did I stop painting altogether?”

Ten years ago, Brexit felt like a political event. Looking back, I think it was also something more personal and more cultural.

As a British-Lebanese writer, I had always taken Britain’s place in Europe for granted. The EU was the geographic and cultural bridge between the two halves of my identity.

A decade later, I live in Dubai, yet still find myself drawn to the rituals of British life. Distance has a way of clarifying what belonging means.

In my latest column for @thenationalnews.com Weekend, I reflect on Brexit, identity and Britain’s increasingly complicated relationship with itself ten years on.

The image accompanying the piece in this post is J.M.W. Turner’s Calais Pier (1803), painted after one of his first journeys across the Channel, a reminder of a Britain that once looked naturally towards the continent.

Yorkshire has long occupied a special place in the British imagination. It is the county of the Brontës, of James Herriot, of Bram Stoker, of windswept moors and enduring characters. A landscape that has inspired some of the country’s most beloved stories. Tucked among the dales, Masham offers a different expression of that same heritage. Here, the romance of Yorkshire is found in market squares, stone cottages and breweries that have been part of local life for generations. In God’s Own Country, few places capture the simple pleasures of the region quite so well: a long walk across the hills, a good book and a perfectly poured pint at the end of the day. taken in Masham, North Yorkshire Dales by @nasri.atallah

Long before Hashel Al Lamki became one of the UAE’s most celebrated contemporary artists, with work held by institutions including the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi and Barjeel Art Foundation, he was a child in Al Ain turning a spare room in his family home into a makeshift studio and asking his parents not for toys, but for art supplies.

In the latest issue of TN, out today, we spend time with Al Lamki as he reflects on the journey from those early days to a practice now shaped by geology, migration, ancestral trade routes and the idea of ‘spice punk’ — a reimagining of the connections between the Gulf, East Africa and Asia beyond western narratives.

The conversation arrives as @artdubai returns next week, where Al Lamki will unveil a new community-based work born from artisan collaboration and collective making. For an artist concerned with belonging, memory and layered histories, the fair remains more than a marketplace, it is part of the ecosystem that grew alongside his own artistic practice.

Read my profile of Hashel Al Lamki in the May issue of TN Magazine available in today’s edition of The National and online at the link in bio.
