Learning Through Nature

So grateful to work as a nanny in Central London. It's full of incredible parks and gardens. Who needs a garden when you have access to an abundance of outdoor learning.

I look after a two year old who shares my love of nature. We are a perfect match to explore and observe nature in the local environment.

This is in the National history museum nature gardens.

Lunar New Year
The year of the snake

We celebrated the new year over two days. On Tuesday, we went to V&A museum for inspiration. The displays on Asian culture were amazing.

On Wednesday, we attended an incredible story telling session in Royal Albert Hall. The story was 'The great race' which is the story about the Chinese Zodiac.

I have collected special resources over the years and my Mongolian doll set is so precious. They were carefully explored by my 21 month old charge. Strings of golden beads were used to symbolise snakes.

Tangerines are given during new year as they are believed to bring good luck and wealth.
A selection of books were added and new year music played in the back ground.
A new food tasting session took place with edamame beans.

Imagination

Following children's interests
Planning in the moment

I could observe children and their interests/ideas all day long. They come up with the most unique things.
Child K has recently shown an interests in her hair bands and wears them on her ankles and wrists.

I extended her interests by adding her new soft toys given to her by santa. I added one band and then sat back and observed her placing many bands over the animals legs.
She stayed deeply engaged and showed her excellent fine motor skills. This activity is perfect for young children to develop their hand muscles.

Polar Bear Play

Winter Theme

Following babys interest in bears.

Previously, she hadn't shown much interest in playdough. This changed with the addition of books and bears. I rolled the dough into ball shapes to create snowballs, this enabled her to touch and move the dough with confidence.

'1,2,3'
'A walk in the countryside

This book is definitely one of my autumn favourites. It reminds me of books from my childhood.
It's a lovely short story showing animals and autumn nature treasures. There are numbers on each page, showing sweet images and adventures.
I recommend this book for under 3's.

Books play a big part of my activities and I enjoy creating play around the stories. Baby was eager to throw the leaves up in the air, collect the autumn stones and place inside a small bag. She used the characters whilst we shared the story together. The characters were great to place on the pages. I left the book open at the page with stepping stones. To my amazement, she walked across the stepping stones. ❤

'Zoom, Zoom, Zoom'

Following children's interests is the best way to encourage engagement. We have been singing this song numerous times during the day. I created space related activities to extend baby's interest.

Did you know Neptune's biggest moon Triton is covered with ice volcanoes?
I made mini ice volcanoes using frozen cornflour and water. The cornflour sinks to the bottom during the freezing process. After a while, the cornflour part melts and creates a softer inner.
