By chance I came across a first edition English translation of Thomas Mann's "This Peace" tucked away at the side of a book shop, for only $5. This short essay was published in 1938 (87 years ago!), shortly after the Munich Agreement, when Britain and France allowed Nazi Germany to annex part of Czechoslovakia in a misguided attempt for "peace" (which, as we all know, failed). Mann, who was an exiled German novelist, saw this as a betrayal of democracy that helped clear the way for Hitler's fascism.

Although this all sounds pretty negative, we must not forget that Hitler's fascism ultimately did not win. So, I wanted to share a few hopeful quotes Mann ended his essay with.

My favorite one:
"We must have no fear. Reason and truth may suffer apparent eclipse. But in us, in our hearts, they are eternally free." by @nata.zhong

here's a tiny collection of pictures taken this year featuring floods, wedang rondes, baking, projects, and good times (despite 2020 being scuffed) with the family.
