Unity of contrast
This piece is made using a variety of differently coloured and patterned fabrics that all come together to create one coherent piece. This presents the message of though we may not all look and act the same, in the end, we are all one.

The 1970s

Across Britain, America, France and other parts of Europe, including the Republic of Ireland, the second wave of feminism was underway, but in the North, progress was much slower.  It was near the mid 70s before women started to organise as women and feminist ideas started to permeate. In 1975, International Women’s year was declared by the United Nations and International Women’s Day was resurrected in Belfast. The Equal Pay Act came into force in 1975 and the Sex Discriminations Order in 1976, bringing women’s rights more into focus.

The 1930s

Due to the Great Depression, there were fewer jobs available. Employers generally preferred to award available jobs to men who’d traditionally worn the mantle of the family breadwinner. As fewer and fewer women were able to find employment, the societal ideals that had embraced increasing female freedoms had been forgotten. Domesticity, motherhood and homemaking once again became regarded as the only truly proper and fulfilling role for women.

The 1920s

The Roaring Twenties were no stranger to the concept of Feminism and was an important decade for massive change in terms of women’s history. Strict Victorian values were slowly forgotten about and society was changing in ways that had never been seen before. Women’s right to vote came into force in 1920 ,which was a long awaited pivotal moment and, to some extent, gave them freedom over the way they expressed themselves within society. As their newfound political confidence grew, so did their daring attitudes, and the demand for social and liberal change was at the forefront of women’s minds. As a result of this, despite the lack of equal opportunities within the workplace, the population of women in work had almost doubled by 1921.

The 1800s

During the 1800s, a woman’s place was in the home. Marriage signified a woman’s maturity and respectability, but motherhood was confirmation that she had entered the world of womanly virtue and female fulfillment. For a woman not to become a mother meant she would be labelled as inadequate, a failure or in some way abnormal. Motherhood was expected of a married woman and a childless single woman was a figure to be pitied.

The 1780s

The 18th century was an age defined by gender inequality and discrimination. The idea of the superiority of men and their ownership over women made women oppressed victims of the patriarchal society. Women weren’t even allowed to leave the house without the consent of their husbands. The only identity women could have in the 18th century was being the wife of a prosperous man. The sole purpose of a woman’s life was to find a husband, serve him flawlessly, and reproduce. Through this, a woman was able to have a respectable and fulfilling life with economic security.

Ancient Greece

Women in Ancient Greece had very few rights in comparison to male citizens. They were unable to vote, own or inherit land. A woman’s place was in the home and her purpose in life was to carry and raise children. Information on women and their roles in that era is very under documented due to the documentation of life during that time being mainly written by male authors.

Final Major Project
Divine Feminine by Natalia Bela

As a designer, I am profoundly inspired by the history that shaped my own opportunities. My Final Major Project explores the intersection of women’s fashion and the long struggle for gender equality. My research into the garments and lived experiences of women throughout time has allowed me to connect with a legacy of progress. Without the groundwork laid by previous generations, I would not have the platform I hold today.

This outcome consists of six looks inspired by pivotal eras, including Ancient Greece and the transformative styles of the 1920s and 1970s. Though the silhouettes vary, they are bound together by the spirit of womanhood. Through these garments and the diverse expressions of the models who wear them, I aim to showcase the breathtaking fluidity and strength of femininity across the ages.

For this project we were given a brief from @sheltercharity asking us to create an outcome, which spreads awareness about homelessness and its reality. I wanted to demonstrate the living conditions of temporary accommodation, especially the idea of black mould and its effect on people living with exposure to it.

My outcome is a dress which extends up the walls and ceiling to resemble a room covered in black mould with details such as 74 black beads to represent the 74 children and babies who have passed away in temporary accommodation over the past 5 years in England. To add, this dress is made from a cheap material called Calico to represent how temporary accommodation is cheaply and carelessly built. Alongside this, my use of ink is due its difficulty to wash out, linking to the difficulty of black mould removal and how it can’t just be done by anyone and landlords choose to delay its removal or simply ignore it as a whole. The people framed on the walls of this room are a few of the people who have passed away due to the effects of black mould, one of these including the devastating case of 2 year old Awaab Ishak. I’ve also mixed my outcome with performance art, having myself sit in this dress for the entirety of the @vadbritschool exhibition. My discomfort from the inability to move is to represent the discomfort faced by those having to live in the conditions of temporary accommodation.

For this project, I was given the brief to express my chosen future specialist industry through an outcome. This lead me to create a concept called ‚the blueprint of womenswear’, which expresses the stepping stones of fashion design womenswear, specifically haute couture. For this concept, I wanted to create a very feminine and structurally intricate dress in calico fabric. The expression of femininity emphasises the importance of women in the the fashion industry, especially couture, and how without us it wouldn’t be what it is today. The use of calico fabric shows the significance of its use for mockups and how they’re a key step to the creation of an outcome. Also, calico being a plainly coloured fabric means that the main focus would be directed to the structure and shape of the garment rather than its colours and patterns. I also wanted to include a range of structural techniques to highlight the amount of intricacy and detail that goes into haute couture fashion design womenswear in order to create unique and beautiful outcomes.

My piece is inspired by my chosen book- ‚beastly’ by Keggie Carew. For this project, we had an added brief from Dr. Martens called ‚context is everything’, which asked us to take our original theme and flip it on its head. I applied this by flipping my original theme of the relationship between humans and animals throughout time to the theme of the decaying beauty of earth caused by human behaviour and actions, which is what my piece demonstrates.
I made use of a warm colour palette, expressing the relaxation, peace and harmony of the natural world that’s slowly decaying into dark shades or brown and black to express the decay of that harmony. This darker section is also composed from recycles and repurposed fabric and clothing to support my theme and demonstrate the steps we have to take towards reviving our environment. The dramatic and voluminous layers of the skirt and neck piece are made to resemble petals of a blooming flower, in the skirts case, slowly leading into decay. As you can tell, the lower bodice of my dress is quite the contrast from the rest. Though this section, I wanted to demonstrate the brutality of animal hunting, mainly bird, and its effects of the environment, some examples being: mass extinction, over breeding of species and more.
This overall piece is a demonstration of how the irresponsible and destructive behaviour of humans have lead to the now irreversible decay of our planet.
