Hi!

I haven’t properly introduced myself yet so I will do that now!

My name is Natalie and I write fantasy romance books with a splash of horror. I created this account to document my ongoing writing journey and to keep me accountable. Every week, I will share an update on the progress I have made and provide some insight into my writing process.

My goal is to become a traditionally published author (though I don’t have a timeline 😅). When my project feels ready, I will query literary agents to help me navigate the publishing world.

Now, here are some facts about me beyond writing.

🍞I have been making sourdough for the last few months and I love it (even though my bread often turns out ugly).

🦮I have a golden retriever named Oliver (also known as Ollie). Everyday, he greets me like I’ve been gone for five days even if it’s only been five minutes. I adore it.

🍓 It is strawberry season in Maine and I am eating a ton of berries—and loving every bite. There is nothing better than a fresh picked berry.

💍 I am married to my best friend. Our love is the inspiration for every love story I write.

🎤 I love going to concerts and attend several a year. This month (which was very irregular) I attended 3 concerts (Yungblud, Mumford & Sons, and Lord Huron), all of which were a blast!

Writing update!

I did not write a lot this past week but did hit a milestone in the manuscript so that is something to celebrate! Now with the first two parts under my belt, I am going in to the latter half of the book with hopes to power thorough at an accelerated pace (fitting, given the pace of the book 😉)

Yesterday was my husband’s birthday and today is Oliver’s! 🥳

While we are still celebrating my husband this weekend, we are also celebrating Ollie! With pets, treats, toys, a walk, Ollie is having a good day!

I’m so lucky to have him as my pup—he is the cutest and sweetest boy and always makes me happy to walk through the door!

This weekend, I am reading 2 books. Both have gorgeous sprayed edges and intriguing covers, and are such a good time! One is a super-cute small-town romance and the other is a spooky short story collection (I’ve read the first one and loved it!)

Some people might say adorable romance and horror stories shouldn’t go together. Me? I think they are perfect—and are a ln example of my taste. Cute and cozy? Love it? Scare the shit out of me with spooky, creepy, grotesque horror! Sign me up!

October is my favorite month for so many reasons, not least of which because my husband’s birthday is in October (today, in fact!)

As we celebrate with all of his favorite things including pizza, my homemade vanilla cake with vanilla frosting, and jerk chicken, I can’t help but feel grateful for the life we’ve built together.

Without my husband, I wouldn’t be able to write stories with love at their center—and splashes of horror to make the love all the sweeter 🔪🩸🧁

From his height to his kind heart to his dry sense of humor, you’ll find traces of my husband in every character I write.

Story time!

Featuring: me, getting upset that my book isn’t exactly the way I want it be yet; and my husband: being the solid rock in the storm of my own self-doubt.

Yesterday, I finally finished the midpoint of this draft (yay!!!), and while I’m happy to have made such progress, I still have a ways to go.

While I await @smoochpitig determinations to see if I’ll be switching gears to a different WIP, I find myself in a weird space—wondering if I should go back and edit the first half of this manuscript or keep trucking along and do deep edits in draft 4. 🤔

This week, progress was not as great as I would have hoped—however, instead of beating myself up, I am proud of myself for still getting some work done. 2 chapters are in the books and I am edging closer to the midpoint 😱

While life through some tough punches, there were also some really great highs this week. My hopes are sparked for smoochpit, Taylor Swift dropped new music, I spent some time with family, and attended an author book signing event put on by @novellabooksmaine and was inspired by so many amazing authors, and delighted by the most delicious beverages from @thestraydogcoffeeco

A new week has started. While life is still throwing some punches, I have hope in my heart, and am motivated to keep putting my fingers on the keyboard.

Who knows? Maybe one day I’ll have a table of my own at an author event 🤞

Sometimes, you need a little red velvet ice cream to brighten up your day—even if it’s a little scary 🫣

Bangor is still celebrating Stephen King’s birthday, littering imagery and fun treats across our walking path. Carrie has reminded me of Stephen King’s tenacity—his first published novel after years of rejection.

He kept trying even though it was hard and scary. If he and so many others could do it, why can’t I?

The biggest obstacle to my success (at this point in time) is my own fear and self-doubt. And really, what’s scarier to me? The fear of rejection or the fear of never having tried at all.

So as I retreat to my writing den, I leave you with a question: what is the scariest goal you harbor?

This week, I have found me groove again. Writing has been super hard lately but I’ve finally gotten over some mental hurdles and have been coming to the keyboard with a better mindset, resulting in an easier heart and greater progress.

Also fun this week: Bangor hosted a series of events to celebrate Stephen King’s birthday (which is today, happy birthday!), resulting in consumption of a Red Rum Punch (tasty), and Prom Night whoopie pie (sooo cute, fun, and yummy)!

I am starting out this week refreshed and ready to get cracking again. Maybe this week I’ll hit 10k (or better!) for my total. Only time will tell! 👀
