I was reminded this week by @i_am_yaayaa that my first love was the written word. I get this trait from my mum @soniaw6073 for sure 💛 by @nataliedcampbell

I was working 16-hour days, back to back, for months. I put every ounce of exhaustion down to the grind, because why wouldn’t I?

What I didn’t know: my bloodwork had been signalling a problem for at least 4 years. I just didn’t know how to read it, and no GP flagged it to me either.

Then the burnout hit. And I felt a mass in my lower abdomen.

Heavy periods, year after year. I’d always just called it “normal.” It wasn’t.

The diagnosis: one fibroid, 11cm, growing outside my uterus. 4 to 6 smaller ones alongside it. Together, the root cause of chronic anaemia I didn’t even know I had.

This isn’t rare. Black women are diagnosed with fibroids at higher rates, often later, and are statistically more likely to have symptoms dismissed. My bloods were talking for 4 years. I want yours to be heard sooner.

Burnout can mask something physical. “Normal” periods can still be too heavy. Ask for the bloodwork. Ask again if something feels off.

Follow @dawn_heels for more on #FibroidAwarenessMonth. Her page gave me all the insight I needed to find the right consultants and ask the right questions.

Multitasking is an important life skill. Here’s evidence of my latest skillmaxxxing in action.

These pictures demo a lot of tasks, all in one:

- Relieving a tired mum for 22.5 minutes whilst also…
- Establishing my order of 1st in the fav aunty rank (I start early).
- Staying hydrated. V. important in this weather.
- Establishing early education practices.
- Enjoying adult nostalgia, The Hungry Caterpillar was a childhood favourite. Rod Campbell books are classics (IYKYK), they are winging their way to her as I type, ready for round two.
- Taking some time for levity and catching up with the girls…🧡

*Permission to post this was granted by mum. She kicked me out at 11pm once I started a debate with her other half about utility infrastructure and domestic security. by @nataliedcampbell

Last week, as Chancellor of the University of Westminster, I hosted our first Chancellor’s Circle breakfast. It was my moment of ‘give back’ to a community I love being a part of.

As business leaders we get to convene. We get to curate a room and put the right people in it. In this case, students next to the organisations backing them, leadership next to the partners making it real. This is a privilege I don’t take lightly, and honestly, I couldn’t not do it. It’s my bias for action.

The Chancellor’s Circle exists because organisations chose to open doors for our students - mentoring, office visits, internships, pathways into industries they might never have pictured for themselves.

It was my privilege to award the Chancellor’s Award for Impact to Midhusa Mohan, representing Cognizant. Over four years, their team has helped more than 150 students upskill in tech, AI and digital. This is an example of mentoring at scale, building real pathways.

A highly commended went to Eva Sheppard, representing Stonehage Fleming, now part of Corient. Their insight sessions opened up finance careers for students who might never have considered the sector without knowing more about the options (and networks). The result? Interns are now in permanent graduate roles.

We also introduced the Circle to Zone29, our new careers and enterprise centre, built for exactly this kind of collaboration.

Vice Chancellor, Professor Peter Bonfield closed with reflections on what sustained partnership does for a university and its students. With Zone29 up and running (please pop in if you’re around Baker Street) I’m even more excited about our partnerships with industry and the long term outcomes for the UoW community.

I’m grateful to every organisation in the Circle, and to everyone who shows up for our students in ways that count. Thanks Lynne Berry CBE, Peter Bonfield and Laura Hughes for entertaining my ideas that have consequences 😉 taken in University of Westminster - Marylebone Campus 2017-18 by @nataliedcampbell

Even in the age of AI, the NHS will always be a people service. I was reminded of this quite profoundly at the Skills for Health ‘Our Health Heroes’ award ceremony last week.

Skills for Health put on a brilliant celebration of the people who keep our NHS moving. Not the names you usually see in headlines. The ones doing the work.

Huge congratulations to all of this year’s winners. A few nominations that stayed with me:

Alexander Wheeler, who built sibling programmes and peer support at Claire House Children’s Hospice so families have somewhere to fall apart safely.

Gnai Kareema Mathias, whose skill in seizure monitoring at UCLH doesn’t just save lives it’s reshaping what safe practice looks like for everyone around her.

Jeremias Sion, who turned theatre delays at King George Hospital into one of the most resilient services in his trust.

Tony Kelly, a volunteer who’s spent years getting honest about diabetes so thousands of others could take control of theirs.

And the West Kent Health & Care Partnership, who broke down silos to build a neighbourhood model for children’s mental health - fewer A&E visits, more young people who feel seen.

Emma Revie’s keynote was the beating heart of the day. Honest, generous, and it left the whole room thinking deeply about what neighbourhood health really means.

It was also a lovely moment to recognise our health hero honouree, Alan Milburn who was introduced by his longtime friend and colleague Lord Victor Adebowale CBE. Thank you both for joining us.

Credit to John Rogers and the Skills for Health team for creating a space to celebrate people that matter.

And a moment that mattered to me personally: my grandmothers were cleaners at Northwick Park Hospital - Jamaican immigrants who cared about their contribution to the NHS - they left home at 7pm and came back at 7am. I never heard a complaint, I gave them their honours in my closing speech as Chair. taken in Queen Elizabeth II Centre by @nataliedcampbell

If I start something, I finish it. This is my 14th year running 10k races. I might not get faster but you can guarantee I’ll be at the start and finish line.

If you want something, show up, start moving and you’ll find your finish line.

Nice to see @blackgirlsdorunuk out there too 🔥 taken in Brighton Seafront by @nataliedcampbell

If you’ve ever wondered what a Served with Purpose podcast’s annual debrief looks like…
Think big belly laughs, cocktail confessions, and debating whether Crying Into a Picante deserves its own chapter.

Purpose? Yes. Reflection? Absolutely.
But also? A whole lot of joy.
