For @nataliekarpushenko, the biggest lesson is simple but profound: we’re not separate from nature. 🌊

“I think that’s why I like to mix the human body with animals, water and landscapes in my photographs. I want to show that everything is connected. We’re not outside of nature — we are nature too.”

Her images ask us to reconsider our place in the world, not as visitors, but as participants in a living system with its own balance and intelligence.

“And I think that feeling of belonging is what I’m trying to show through my work.”

When we feel we belong, protection becomes instinct, not obligation. 🐋

There are places where you can almost feel time.

My friend @katia.bleu and I came to Giverny to shoot in the same pond connected to Monet’s famous water garden. I felt so inspired by the water, the light, the reflections, and the quietness of this beautiful place.

And there’s something incredible about being here more than 130 years later, creating too -just in our own, slightly different way.

Places change, people come and go, but inspiration keeps flowing, just like the water in this pond. 🤍 taken in Giverny - Jardim de Monet - França by @nataliekarpushenko

Lately, I’ve been spending more and more time photographing local people.

During one week on Sumba, I had three photoshoots, all with local Sumbanese women. These sessions were far more challenging than they might appear. Sitting on a water buffalo in the middle of the water is incredibly difficult, requiring balance, trust, and courage.

We learned together. With every attempt, we gained more confidence and experience.

I was deeply impressed by the bravery of these young women. They looked so delicate, yet showed remarkable strength and determination throughout the process.

‘Love Without Ego’ is a meditative drone performance filmed on Bali’s black volcanic sand.

For this work, 48 women were gathered and invited them to move together in an open circle. The circle is never fully closed — a gap remains and keeps moving. Because of this, there is no fixed beginning and no fixed end. The first becomes the last, and the last becomes the first.

Inspired by Taoist philosophy, the piece expresses what love without ego means: a space where no one is above another, where everyone leads and everyone follows, and where each person is equally important.

Seen from above, the moving circle becomes a simple reflection on connection, equality, and harmony. Through this shared movement, the performance explores the idea that we are strongest when we move together rather than compete for a place at the front.

A last-minute gathering before I leave NEW YORK ✨

Join us TOMORROW ( 2 June ) for a beautiful live piano performance by composer @marta_cascales_alimbau from 5–6 PM at My solo Exhibition “WOMEN OF WATER WOMEN OF EARTH” After the music, I’ll be at the gallery and would love to chat about my work and meet you 🩶

Step behind the scenes with Natalie Karpushenko (@nataliekarpushenko) in the making of ‘Love Without Ego’.

The work began with a question: what does love without ego mean in practice? A circle appeared first. Then came the detail that defines the piece: a small gap within the circle — a mechanism that keeps shifting who is first and who is last, translating the impermanence of leadership.

On Bali’s black volcanic sand, Natalie directed 48 local women, dressed in traditional Balinese clothing in beige and white tones. Their presence adds a second layer to the work: a study in female leadership, where everyone leads, everyone follows, and each person is equally essential.
