At the Museum of Contemporary Photography (MoCP), If Emmett Till Lived: Freedom on American Ground confronts one of the most consequential acts of racial violence in American history through radical historical imagination.

Curated by scholar and author Dr. Sarah Elizabeth Lewis in collaboration with Reverend Wheeler Parker Jr.—Till’s cousin, best friend, and the last surviving witness to his kidnapping—the landmark exhibition brings together photographs by more than 110 artists from MoCP’s permanent collection. The exhibition serves as a creative monument to Till’s unlived life and enduring legacy, while asking viewers to reckon with the historical conditions that foreclosed that future and the unfinished project of securing freedom on American ground.

The exhibition opened at MoCP earlier this month to an extraordinary response, drawing a capacity audience and an exceptional gathering of artists, curators, scholars, and cultural and civic leaders from Chicago and across the country.

On view through Dec 19. Plan your visit in bio.

Part 2 of my walk through with @mocpchi is here!

One of the coolest parts of my visit to the Museum of Contemporary Photography was getting to go behind the scenes and tour the museum's vault—a space most visitors never get to see.

I had no idea how much goes into preserving a photography collection. From climate-controlled storage to the careful handling of each piece, it gave me a whole new appreciation for the work happening behind the galleries.

A huge thank you to Natasha Egan and the team at the Museum of Contemporary Photography for this incredible experience. If you have not been, it is absolutely worth adding to your Chicago list.

Have you been to the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago?? Let us know which exhibit you saw there.

I’m lucky that part of my job is getting to explore Chicago’s incredible cultural gems!

I recently sat down with Natasha Egan, Executive Director of the Museum of Contemporary Photography, to talk about the museum’s history, its incredible exhibitions, and the important work it does to support artists and photography as a contemporary art form.

This is Part 1—stay tuned for Part 2, where we get to go behind the scenes and see the vault! 😁

It was a pleasure spending time with the remarkable @coulterfussell in her studio in Water Valley, Mississippi. The way she transforms photographs and materials into quilts, sculptures, stuffed animals, and collages is endlessly inventive and deeply original. Surrounded by donated clothing, fabric, animal hides, sewing machines, and countless unexpected objects, her studio feels like a place where memory, history, and imagination converge! @k_l_irvine @alaynapernell taken in Water Valley, Mississippi by @natashahegan

Spent the summer solstice in darkness with @j_tichy Jan Tichy at the Broad Art Museum at MSU. Jan's exhibition, Darkness, brings together Jan's continuous exploration of light with scientific research about the effects of artificial light on both human and insect's circadian rhythms. We also had a chance to explore MSU's planetarium, and observe the moon on the clear night through MSU's 1970s research telescope at their observatory. taken in Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at MSU by @natashahegan

Day 3 visiting EJI's Legacy Sites. Today was spent at the National Memorial for Peace and Justice, the first national memorial dedicated to documenting and honoring the thousands of Black Americans who were victims of racial terror lynchings in the United States. Make a plan to experience all the Legacy Sites if you have yet to visit in the last couple years! Thank you Bryan Stevenson and each of you at Equal Justice Initiative for the work you do! @eji_org #equaljusticeinitiative taken in Montgomery, Alabama by @natashahegan

Day two visiting EJI's Legacy Sites: The Legacy Museum and Freedom Monument and Sculpture Park. No pictures are allowed in the museum or sculpture park, so I encourage all to experience it in person. The Museum is located on the site of a cotton warehouse and tells an in-depth narrative of enslavement in America to the current mass incarceration crisis. The National Monument to Freedom features more than 120,000 unique surnames recorded in the 1870 census after Emancipation, representing the names of more than 10 million enslaved people in America and their descendants. Templeton, Hollins, and Egan are all on the wall. Ended the day meeting with the most remarkable leader of @eji_org Bryan Stevenson. #legacymuseum #equaljusticeinitiative taken in Montgomery, Alabama by @natashahegan
