It’s time to vote! North Carolina’s Republican Party is corrupt and it’s time to get rid of them. If you’re not a multimillionaire, they don’t care one bit about you and your family, they only care about themselves and their bosses (out-of-state donors). They know you’re struggling because of their recklessness so they need someone ELSE to blame, like trans people, immigrants, homeless people, and even your local government that funds parks, emergency response, schools, and street repairs. So they’re putting constitucional amendments on the ballot with outright lies to exploit the culture wars, pretend they care about your pocket book (they don’t), and screw you even more. Don’t fall for it! Vote against all 3 amendments.

This is Wilma Oliver, Senior Code Enforcement officer with the City of Durham for over five years. Wilma took me out to sites throughout her district.

Code enforcement gets few accolades but is one of the city’s most important tools for ensuring we hold property owners accountable and protecting tenants and the habitability of their homes, all while acting fairly and holding grace for property owners struggling with keeping their properties safe and up to code. I’m proud of the work that Wilma and our other code enforcement officers do everyday. And there are more tools we can and should adopt to protect tenants and bring vacant properties back into use for the betterment of the Durham community. taken in Durham, North Carolina by @natebakerdurham

In an era of increasingly concentrated wealth and power, we need to strengthen the power of workers in the workplace by expanding union memberships and shifting toward a worker-ownership model of economic development. I’ve worked closely with Councilmember Rist to spearhead this initiative and I’m gracious for the support of our other Council colleagues and city staff to move this forward.

The best opportunity for getting worker-ownership off the ground is by giving small business owners the tools to be able to sell their businesses to their workers. To scale up, we need to prioritize worker-owned businesses in contracts and by partnering with our city’s anchor institutions, like Durham Tech, NCCU, Duke University, and others. This does not replace supporting our small businesses, which is critical, but instead it further supports and strengthens our small and locally-owned businesses while seeking to build greater wealth among workers across Durham. taken in Durham, North Carolina by @natebakerdurham

Last week City Council approved more single family sprawl rezoning cases, including a 100% large-lot single family case that was argued to contribute to housing diversity. Yes, really.

Durham continues to move full speed backward with regard to walkable and sustainable city planning. Our city disregards the concepts of sustainability, smart growth, and walkability in nearly all of its new growth. I’m afraid we are leaving a growing amount of mess for future generations to have to clean up after us.

Much of the justification for approving bad development is that each case contributes to housing supply. Ironically, many of these cases actually lock in thousands of acres of low density, supply-constraining development.

We must stand up to the real estate industry and demand sustainable, equitable, and walkable growth. taken in Durham, North Carolina by @natebakerdurham

Tenant democracy is a right denied to too many, not a luxury. NC state legislators hate tenants and have stripped them of so many human rights in favor of their landlord donors. Tonight though, in honor of the hard work of Ashton Seniors in Action (ASiA)and Willard Street United (WSU) and with their collaboration, we passed the resolution I introduced expressing support for the rights of tenants to unionize and directing staff to incorporate tenant democracy into future city-funded housing project agreements. The language underwent a number of edits and amendments but ultimately included important clauses to push harder for tenants rights here locally. Councilmembers Cook and Burris were champions of strong language and ultimately we were able to arrive at language that drew unanimous support from Council. Congratulations and solidarity with these tenants and the work of @triangletenants and here’s to continued success, inspiration, and more meaningful organizing victories to come. taken in Durham, North Carolina by @natebakerdurham

THIS LABOR DAY we celebrate the inauguration of the new Amazon CAUSE government, including Italo Medelius and Mary Hill as its president and vice president. President Medelius just completed a 40 DAY FAST to bring attention to the conditions of workplaces at Amazon facilities and beyond. Many congratulations to the cofounder and former president Rev. Ryan Brown for being the spark that ignited this critical project. To overcome the fascist tech bro overlords and the dismal future they seek to build we need unions in the very corner of our city, state, and country. taken in Durham, North Carolina by @natebakerdurham

What does it mean to democratize urban design in Durham?

The urban design of our city shapes the way we live our daily lives and we should be able to shape it.

For too long big developers and outdated rules have created a city built mostly for cars, traffic, sprawl, and real estate profits, rather than people and places.

Some good news is that Durham is ramping up the small area planning initiative across our city and will soon be launching the urban design studio to give greater voice to our residents over the future shape of our city.

The edits, public review, debate, and finalization of the UDO rewrite project is still in the works, as are changes to public street design standards.

We aren’t yet on a path to a truly democratic and pedestrian-oriented urban design future, but we have almost turned a corner toward a better system. taken in Durham, North Carolina by @natebakerdurham

This Thursday, I’m bringing forward a resolution expressing support of recently-formed tenant unions in downtown Durham, Ashton Seniors in Action and Willard Street United. Everyone deserves the right to be in a union. With so few tenant unions and labor unions in our City, we need to grow union density and build them into our municipal policies and practices.

The neoliberal decimation of unions has resulted in a system where rents are too high and wages are too low. Let’s fight back against union-busting and support tenants and workers who are organizing for a better future. taken in Durham, North Carolina by @natebakerdurham
