On Saturday, August 15th, I had the amazing opportunity to shadow Will Palaszczuk, the Play-By-Play Commentator for Charlotte FC’s radio network, for the Crown’s game against the Columbus Crew.

It was an incredible experience to go behind-the-scenes on a radio broadcast of a professional sport done by a team who amazed me in every way.

The key thing I observed was Will’s ability to keep the flow of the broadcast and fill space with commentary. It sounds like a necessity when it comes to any broadcaster, but it’s such a major skill to keep the audience engaged in quiet moments, and I was wowed by how amazing at it Will was. Soccer is nonstop for two 45-minute halves, with little to no breaks. Combine that with a pre and post-game show, and you’ve got a long night with a lot to cover.

Seeing this changed my perspective going into my new year of commentary. The best broadcasters - especially Will - have emphasized and shown me how important preparation is leading up to a broadcast, and I was taken aback by how much Will knew about the team, the players, and everything else going in, and which details he used in specific situations to describe key things about a player who scored, a manager who was yelling in the sidelines, or a substitute in the second half, and how much he enriched the audience with his knowledge.

It was so amazing to spend an extended amount of time learning from a professional in the industry, and I cannot thank everyone at Charlotte FC enough for this opportunity. taken in Bank of America Stadium by @natekretmedia

I recently completed a 2-week Sports Broadcasting Pre-College Program with UMass Amherst. In that time, I wrote and anchored my own sports talk show with a reporter, Santiago Leahy. This is a sneak peek that talk show. You can see the full video on my YouTube, @natekretmedia, or by accessing my LinkedIn page (link in bio).
