In the middle of Stephano's downtown Pittsburgh senior session we were caught a bit off guard by a sudden downpour. We only had one umbrella between us (his parents and brother were along for the shoot) so we crowded under an awning to wait out the storm. As we watched the rain pour down Stefano suggested doing some photos in the rain, saying that it seemed a shame to "waste the opportunity." So with an umbrella in one hand and my Contax G2 in the other, we dove in and just had a blast running around shooting in the rain! I appreciate so much that Stefano was able to see an opportunity in what would be so easy to see as a misfortune. Thanks for the adventure, man!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Had such a blast with Stefano durning his #dahntahn Pittsburgh senior session. I feel like you can always see in the images when a session is a true collaboration rather than a one way street. Between his great clothing choices, sincere expressions, willingness to suggest ideas for photos, and just general fun-ness to work with it was obvious that Stefano invested a lot into his session and I can't thank him enough!

⠀⠀"What makes a person photogenic?" ⠀
⠀⠀
This is a question that I'm asked surprisingly often and for which I have struggled to come up with an answer that I'm really happy with. My response has typically been something along the lines of, "It's about being comfortable in your own skin, and projecting confidence," but you know what? That answer sucks. I think I've always known it sucked, but it sure sounds better than, say, "genetics." I mean, where does that leave those of us (like me) who have little confidence in our ability to muster confidence at will? "Just be confident! And act natural!" Gee. Thanks... A short while ago I came across a quote from Fred (Mister) Rogers, one of my personal heroes, that completely changed the way I think about having my picture taken.

“The whole idea is to look into the television camera and present as much love as you possibly could to a person who might feel that he or she needs it.”
⠀
Now, Fred was talking about his focus and purpose in filming Mister Rogers Neighborhood, but my brain started cross-pollinating and this really got me thinking. Perhaps being "photogenic" doesn't have to be about confidence or looks or skill... maybe it's simply about LOVE. When I'm in a photo is my focus and attention set on trying to project an image of myself that will make other people approve of or feel attracted to me? OR is my intention to project as much love and acceptance as I possibly can for those who might someday look at this image when they really need to feel some? When my sincere intention is set on radiating Love FOR others rather than on attracting approval FROM them, confidence becomes entirely unnecessary and photogenicity, becomes unavoidable. I've been consciously trying this out, imagining say, my wife looking back at these images many years from now... and all of a sudden it's not about me anymore... ⠀
⠀⠀
So, my new answer: Being "photogenic" is what happens naturally when our focus is on projecting love TO others, rather than on getting it FROM them. You can't be self-conscious and others-conscious at the same time!
