The Dalton Highway: Fairbanks, AK to Deadhorse, AK — June 2024 #35mm

This one needs some context. The Dalton Highway is a 414 mile long route that connects interior Alaska to the Arctic Ocean at Prudhoe Bay. The road is 60% gravel or dirt, and the other 40% is “paved” with tons of potholes, frost heaves and pavement breaks. About 100 miles in, you cross into the Arctic Circle at roughly 66° in latitude. There are 3 places to get gas along the 500 mile highway. 240 miles is the longest distance between gas stops. Meager cell service, very few other people. The road is almost exclusively traveled by semi trucks, as it was built as a trucking route intended to service the oil fields at Prudhoe Bay. If you aren’t in a semi truck, you’re a tourist—like me. A lowered e36 on 4-ply budget tires is absolutely not the ideal mode of transportation for this highway. With that said, it was unlike anything I have ever done in my life and I will truly remember this road forever.

10 hours from home, on the shoulder of Interstate 40 between Kingman and Needles, at the end of a week long road trip. Top notch circumstance to kill the water pump.
