New short documentary "Learning to Listen" follows Valeria Vergara, the Director of Raincoast’s Cetacean Conservation Research Program, and team as they set out to uncover the complexities of killer whale communication, amidst the threat of increasing underwater noise.

Filming while alongside our cetacean research team on our research vessel, Achiever, and using drone footage filmed under permit for the project by @johnkelseyphoto (Raincoast Marine Operations’ First Mate and drone pilot), Raincoast’s Communications Manager, @nicolevan.zutphen, shot and put together a short film as a glimpse into what this research means. The film is co-directed by filmmaker, @nathan.isings.

It will be screened in Vancouver at the Roda short film exhibition on Saturday, September 26th, with a Q&A to follow. Stay tuned for the full online release of the film!

It is illegal to fly drones over marine mammals if not under permit. These video clips were taken under SARA research permit XMMS-4-2026 (at a minimum 25m altitude).

Surreal times at Doc Edge Film Festival awards (@docedgefest) last night in Auckland!

Race Be Run - the film about my run across Canada for kids with cancer - got named in this festival a couple of months ago. Then about 2 weeks ago it got named as a finalist.

Got to the city on Tuesday to start catching a few of the other screenings, and quickly had to recalibrate my expectations. The standard of documentaries here is out the gate!! Every doco is seriously good! Was definitely a bit unaware.

Winners here go into contention for the Oscars in the US. 1,600 submissions from some of the world's best documentary makers, covering some of the most pressing subjects at the moment: defiant journalists reporting from inside Gaza, women's fight for equality in Iran, and the toll of unexploded WW2 landmines in the Solomon Islands - as well as some fun ones like the unique world of competitive pickle-ball players on the streets of Los Angeles. One film there was produced by @leonardodicaprio, and one judge was a past Oscar winner. Great experience to stand around chatting with her!

Honoured and humbled to be included.

Then Race Be Run got announced as Special Mention!

Judges feedback was that the honesty of the storytelling, emotional generosity, and the on-the-ground impact of the run were why they wanted to recognize it. They also said that it offered a rare mix of strength and companionship. Reminded me of Dad.

Awesome to see some more recognition for a film inspired by Mum and Dad, and bloody cool to see that a simple, small scale film about making the most of your limited time can foot it at such an outstanding event as this!

Even in the face of incalculable amounts of damage from Hurricane Melissa, the spirit of Jamaica remains strong. While the buildings, landscape and towns surrounding Montego Bay were destroyed, the people of Jamaica share an inspiring spirit of hope for the future.

In January, we wrapped a film with @directrelief about the recovery efforts and incredibly resilient people of Jamaica after Hurricane Melissa struck at the end of 2025. Filmmaker @stefan.calitz rushed down to Jamaica to capture the story of Black River Hospital, the community rebuilding stronger than ever, and the unwavering smiling spirit of the country. Despite all of the loss, the famously happy spirit of Jamaica remains strong.

Been almost a year since posting on here, but this is a great reason.

Race Be Run will have it's World Premiere at 2 outstanding film festivals in New Zealand soon:

- Doc Edge, New Zealand's Oscar-qualifying documentary film festival, &

- The New Zealand Mountain Film & Book Festival,

It's been over 2 years in the making, since day301 of my run across Canada, when I saw an message on Instagram from a local film guy.

It was the hectic final week of the mission: messages & donations were flying in for @childhoodcancercanada, media was non-stop, even the Vancouver @canucks were in touch about donating kit to hand out during my visit to British Columbia Childrens' Hospital 2 days later. It was a lot! One of the busiest weeks of my life.

I fired off a quick response, then promptly forgot all about it. Honestly, from my (admittedly poor) glance at the message, I somehow left with the impression I was chatting to a local teenaged video enthusiast.

Next morning, in the freezing, torrential B.C. rain @richardrcarey and @directingprabh found me. They'd woken up at 5am and driven out from Vancouver. I'd hadn't even mentioned where I was starting from. I just told them the name of the town!

They assured me they wouldn't impose on my day at all. They'd just capture what unfolded.

3Km into my run, I'm freezing & soaked like a drowned rat, when I see a guy running up alongside me on the grass verge in a Goretex coat, carrying a TV camera on a big, heavy gimble... and he's keeping pace with me!

I was suddenly really glad. I thought, "OK... he's the real deal!"

Richard & Prabh followed my entire, jam-packed day that day, including 53Km of running, then stayed for an interview which we wrapped at 11:30pm. I never saw them eat. Then they drove back to Vancouver.

From those rainy, noisy beginnings, they and their mates @nathan.isings & @robinjkavanagh.digital went on to produce a film that I think really captures the spirit of my Canadian journey, sends a good jolt of life-enthusiasm up the audience, and is now premiering at an Oscar-qualifying film festival!!

Grateful, proud and excited to share it.

From an AOD hangout to a film festival run.
Robin and I met Nathan and Richard at an AOD meetup in 2024 where we instantly clicked. After meeting, we all said that one day we would film a short documentary together. A week later, Richard saw a post about Jon Nabbs running across Canada and asked if anyone was free with a day’s notice to film this story (in the pissing rain), in which of course I said yes. We didn’t even have Jon’s phone number when Richard and I decided to drive to Hope, BC to try to find him running.

Out of that came a beautiful short documentary that we were fortunate enough to tell. Thank you Jon for sharing your vulnerability and story.

We are proud to announce that “Race be run” will be showing at both Doc Edge New Zealand and New Zealand Mountain Film and Book Festival next month! by @nathan.isings
