I will be in Alaska all month shooting a documentary “The Edge of The World” directed by @dorofeya20s18 as she uncovers stories from Tlingit, Yupik, and Unangax tribes of Alaska. BTS Part 3 of 3 - Our final stretch brings us to Tsé Biiʼ Ndzisgaii or Monument Valley, Utah. The home of the Diné. During our long journey, this setting was the most breathtaking. This BTS shot mirrors a frame composed by our articulate cinematographer @zachary.peel.mcgregor on the ARRIFLEX II B. The red sand and sunrise complements 35mm film grain well, the perfect backdrop for our bounty hunter played by the legendary @curtisenelson . We also had a fun cameo from 2nd AC @dorofeya20s18 🎥

I made many new friends on this project and memories I won’t forget. I’m grateful to our director James Ciganek and our DP Zachary for having me on this project and thankful for their ambition and passion for analog.

Part 2 - Today we climbed with the ARRIFLEX 35 II B high into the Sierra Nevadas with our fearless cinematographer @zachary.peel.mcgregor for a sharp shooting sequence featuring the talented @curtisenelson as our legendary bounty hunter. Part way through shooting a blizzard came off the mountains and we were in a complete white-out. This was in contrast to the 100 degree weather in the deserts below. Full moon for our campfire scene which lit up the mountains and the surrounding desert. Thanks to our 1st AD @aiden_from_work for keeping us hydrated, warm and dry.

Part 1 - This week I had the pleasure of working with cinematographer Zachary Peel-McGregor with digital and 35mm on the ARRIFLEX 35 II-B in some iconic locations from iconic Western films.
A shoutout to our director/producer James Ciganek for appreciating the classic methods analog filmmaking 🎞️ and to @dorofeya20s18 my trusty 2nd AC 🎬.

Our adventure began in the Mojave desert where we shot all of our interiors and village scenes where we worked with professional weapons wranglers for a classic western gun fight. On day three we traveled to the Sierra Navadas shoot our hero on horseback. Stay turned for my next post where we travel to remote settings in Arizona and Utah.

During our fourth and final week “On the Edge of the World” documentary, we traveled to Unalaska island, homeland of the Qawalangin Unangax tribe. Here we learned more about Unangax culture today, as well as the impact of World War II on the island. When the Japanese invaded the Unangax who lived here were forced to evacuate the islands and live in terrible conditions in southern Alaska. After the war, they returned to a home that had been bombed by the Japanese and polluted and graffitied by US forces. Efforts continue today to protect the environment from the WWII aftermath. This week “On the Edge of the World” we traveled 1,000 miles from mainland Alaska to Atka island, the most remote native village in the United States, to interview the local Unangax people who have lived here for thousands of years. The island rarely has outside visitors and sometimes no planes arrive in Atka for weeks or months.
