Wow… Speechless 🥲

So grateful and proud to have won the PGA of BC Club Professional Championship.

The moment I stepped on the course at Victoria Golf Club I knew it was special. I had never played the course before, but had only heard nothing but great things. And it sure didn’t disappoint! Huge thanks to @victoriagolfclub and @lbernakevitch for hosting us at such a stunning venue.

The course set up well for my game, not too long, tight holes, and tricky greens. I ended up hitting 32 out of 36 greens over the two days. It was nice to have control of my golf ball, which kept me out of trouble.

The stretch of holes 10 thru 12 yesterday in the final round is where I really pulled away, with 3 birdies in a row. I hit my 8 iron on 10 to 3 feet, and from where the ball landed to where it ended up, I still don’t know how it didn’t go in. On 11, I hit my 5 iron to 1 foot below the hole. And then on 12, going from bunker to bunker on the par 5, I ended up making a 40 footer for birdie.

But wow was I nervous… I always want to do well, but once the thought of winning is there, and in a bigger tournament like this, my lack of competitive experience over the past 10 years was catching up. I definitely fought some battles mentally and was able to commit to each shot. That didn’t mean I hit each shot great, but I didn’t make many swings where I didn’t fully go for it.

Thanks @pgaofbc team for a great event and all the work you do for us PGA of BC members.

Thanks @csweetmedia for the amazing photos of the event! 🤩

Thanks @honmagolf & @taylorhull for the great equipment the has helped me have one of my best years of golf in a very long time.

And most importantly, thank you to my amazing wife @emmleonhardt for the incredible support you give me each day.

What a week. 🏆 taken in Victoria Golf Club by @nathan_leonhardt

Course Record 61 (-12) ⛳️

Golf is such a silly, frustrating, beautiful game.

What I would have given to shoot rounds like that when I was practicing full-time and competing for a living! Now, I don’t practice and do it 😣 Best round of my entire life. What a game. It’s amazing what can happen when we get out of our own way.

Thanks @theggtour for another great event, and thanks @quilchenagcc Victor Vianzon @johnvugolf for having us, the course was in amazing condition!

Thank you to my club sponsor @honmagolf @taylorhull for the amazing clubs and ball that have helped me so much this year. TW Tour V irons, TW767 woods, TW-X ball.

Struggling to make a full turn? Check where the pressure is in your feet before trying to rotate harder.

If you set up too far onto your toes, making a bigger turn can leave you feeling like you’re going to tip towards the ball. Your body may limit the movement to keep you balanced, even when you’re physically capable of turning farther.

That’s what I’m demonstrating here. Sometimes the restriction you feel is a response to your starting position, rather than simply a lack of flexibility.

Start by finding a balanced setup, then make a few slow turns. Notice whether you can rotate without feeling like you need to catch yourself. The goal isn’t to sit back on your heels. It’s to give yourself a stable starting point that allows you to move.

Struggling to shallow the club in your downswing? Take a look at what your trail arm is doing.

The way your trail arm moves can influence how the shaft changes direction as you start down. In this demonstration, watch how the club shallows as my trail elbow works in towards the centre of my body. The movement I’m demonstrating comes from external rotation of the trail shoulder.

Start with a slow rehearsal from the top so you can see and feel that relationship. Then blend the same movement into a smooth swing, like I’m doing here. You don’t need to force the elbow into your side.

There are several reasons a club can get steep, so this isn’t a fix every golfer needs. The goal is to understand how your trail arm influences the club, then see whether that’s a movement worth working on in your own swing.

Not sure what’s happening in your swing? Send Coach Nathan your swing videos for a FREE swing analysis. Tap “Free Swing Analysis” in our bio to upload your videos through Skillest.

Spinning out? Try this chair drill.

Start with your lead hip about two inches from the chair.

As you shift and turn, let your lead hip brush across the chair. Keep turning until the front of your trail hip comes through to the chair’s edge.

Watch it at full speed, then use the slower replay to see the contact.

The uppercut rehearsal helps you feel that same shift and turn. Try a few slow repetitions, then take that feel into a shot.

Golf is hard enough without making it harder on yourself.

One bad shot and you’re changing your swing. One new tip and you’re changing the plan. Then you judge the whole round against the best golf you’ve ever played.

Sound familiar?

These are eight things we see golfers get caught up in at TDA. Understanding them can save you a lot of frustration, and help you spend your practice time on what actually matters for you.

Recognise yourself in a few of these? You’re not alone.

Standing up too early in your downswing? You might be pushing off the ground in the wrong direction!

A common mistake I see is golfers pushing off their trail leg in a way that drives their trail hip and glute toward the golf ball. This causes the pelvis to move closer to the ball and the belt buckle to point up toward the sky too early.

Instead, I want you to feel like you’re keeping your butt back and your belt buckle pointing down and underneath you as you start the downswing.

From there, feel the pelvis move laterally and rotate, allowing you to push off the trail leg in a direction that moves the trail hip more toward the target rather than toward the golf ball.

The goal isn’t to stop using the ground for power. It’s to use it in the right direction and at the right time!

This can help create:
• better pelvic rotation
• less early extension
• more space for your arms and club
• more consistent contact

A simple swing thought: Keep that belt buckle hidden, hidden, hidden!

Rolling the clubface open during your takeaway?

Here’s a simple checkpoint: at the position shown, the clubface’s leading edge should roughly match your spine angle.

Watch the difference between the first and second demonstrations. Rehearse slowly, pause to check the face, then take that feel into a shot.

If you’re swinging over the top, check what your trail wrist is doing in the downswing.

Instead of just trying to “hold the lag,” give your trail hand a purpose. Use it to help keep the clubhead behind you longer rather than throwing it out toward the ball too early.

This can help create:
• a more shallow shaft
• more stored power
• a better delivery into impact

Most golfers try to close the clubface the wrong way.

Simply scooping the hands through impact doesn’t really close the face. It mostly adds loft. A better feel is rotating the forearm through impact and, for a right-handed golfer, feeling the right thumb turn over the left thumb.
