Thank you,

@civitas_independent for giving me a home since I was 18.

@jbull321 @cory_on_quads @braaaad_y @jdeese.drums for pushing the boundaries of what a quadline can achieve at Civitas and in the Carolina’s, and thank you for being my best friends along the way.

@taylorpoole7 and @nathan.trent126 for teaching me not only to be a better drummer, but to grow as a person, lead by example, and learn from my mistakes.

@fommy.treeman for joining this family that I care so much about and putting your heart and soul in to trying to help us succeed. You’re going to be well known as an educator someday and I am honored to have marched for your first quadline.

@jbull321 for trusting me all season long and pushing to the end. Your skill and consistency pushed me to be a better quad drummer than I could have imagined. You are my brother for life and I am so glad we got to do this together.

@johnie_weeks for making sure to come to every WGI championships. Being able to perform for my brother has always been one of the best parts about performing in UD. I’ll never forget seeing you in the crowd my first time there. Having your support has meant so much to me.

@jazzielorraine for your unwavering support and love. Being away every weekend for 6 months is tough. To know how proud you are of me and to see you at every performance gave me so much confidence. I love you so much.

@hthr.rk and @csmcelroy for all the awesome shots over the years, including these.

15th in hands
16th in the world
One of the best quadlines in WGI

I could not have dreamt of a better ending

It has been nearly a decade since I began my marching band career. I feel privileged to have achieved almost every goal I set for myself through that time. I feel equally privileged to have experienced failure that has directed me to better places and harder work.
My overarching goal through my time playing quads has been to earn a world class contract. I’m extremely happy to announce that I have been offered a contract to march quads for @civitas_independent
This will be my final season marching and I get to do it in world class with the home team. Dream come true. by @nathanquads

Ok so it’s no secret I stopped working for MCM lol. As great as that accomplishment would be, there’s a two factors that led to leaving that goal behind. First, Civitas is entering the next season in world class! I’ve been a part of that ensemble since 2022 and there’s no way I’m going to miss out on being a part of even more history and helping the group’s legacy propel even further. Second, I’m in the closing stages of my degree and the work load has been no joke. Preparing for two world class auditions while doing school and keeping up with learning the POTM show is just too much for my plate. I’d rather put the energy I do have fully into preparing for Civitas. I’ve still been practicing like crazy and my hands are in the best shape they’ve ever been. Can’t wait to post a video and show you all :) by @nathanquads

QMCM? Day 7

Eighth note stock control at 180 BPM

I could write an essay analyzing this rep, but I think a lot of the issues stem from tense down strokes. My down strokes have improved significantly, but they’re still too inconsistent. The most glaring one to me is every turn around measure with the upstrokes. Tensing for the upstroke gives me no time to relax for the downstroke that follows immediately. I believe this is the reason why in a lot of my reps of this tonight I struggled with slowing down at the end of a phrase going into the next one.

QMCM? Day 4

Video one, accent tap variations at 166 BPM
Video two, motion change patterns 1-4 at 120 BPM
Video three, motion change patterns 1-4 at 150 BPM

Self critique: 166 is my max tempo with accent taps for now. I want to continue working on staying relaxed at the end of the down stroke so that my hand is softer and more prepped to play legato taps. I see the most tension in the third and second variation. In motion change id like to see a more consistent hand shape for both tempos when changing to the roll pattern. My worst tendency with timing in this exercise is waiting too long for the second partial of the first triplet after eighth notes and sixteenth notes. I think I’m trying to feel the difference in space rather than just playing it in time and correct.

QMCM? Day 3

First video is fives with one and two traveling diddles at 80 BPM
Second and third video is fives with one and two traveling diddles at 90 BPM

Self critique: coming from a group that uses more forearm support for rolls, I’m having some issues keeping the tap heights down while trying to implement more wrist. In the two diddle section I can see a tendency to make too large of an upstroke before playing the low end diddle. I’m going to strive to see how close I can get to playing rolls without lifting the bead, and instead only pushing the bead down with a wrist turn.

QMCM? Day 2

This is multiple bounce variations at 120 BPM from the basics packet.

Self critique: Need to do a better job of relaxing the first stroke so I can turn my wrist more for the second note in each phrase. I can hear little blips in some of the groupings and I can see the wrist turning less when that happens. This could also lead to the hand switches being less backside of the tempo.

Little life update, I’m a two time WGI silver medalist now. Thank you so much to @civitas_independent for bringing me back in for another season. After taking last season off I was happy just to march again, so winning a silver medal and beating the ensembles scoring record (which I help set in 2022) was the cherry on top.

As much as I’d love to take this week and enjoy my accomplishments there is still work to be done. Id like to publicly announce that I’ll be auditioning for MCM 2026! This account will shift into a practice account with daily posts until auditions. I’ve been drumming since Monday, but here are some videos from today’s session that I saw a lot of progress in.

Self critique:
I have a lot of work left to do with my left hand. The elbow surgery I had 2 years ago has made my left hand move and feel a lot different than my right hand, so a lot of my focus with fundamentals will be getting the left hand to catch back up. Right now I can see and hear the biggest difference between the two hands at the low end.

It was suggested in our video assignment this week to make a 16ths and 9s check-xercise. Here’s my attempt at 130, 140, 150, and 160. There’s definitely inconsistencies in the transitions and 160 is a little bit past my tempo threshold for this. All the more reason to keep this in my practice sessions for the next few weeks.
