Book Review: Yesteryear

⭐️⭐️⭐️ (2.5/5)

Picked up Yesteryear for our book club because all of the hype surrounding this book. I was intrigued by the premise and selfishly heard that Anne Hathaway was going to produce and star in this movie 🤭

It was easy to jump into and I found the writing to be hilarious at first. Overtime I was getting tired of the inner dialogue/lazy descriptive writing and was disappointed in the overall execution of this book. The only reason I finished was because it was part of our book club and I just wanted to understand how the time jump happened (whether it was sci-fi related or something else).

The time jump narrative specifically to the 19th century reminded me of Kindred written by Octavia Butler (which I’ve also reviewed on my page) and to be honest, that book was SO much better than this. What frustrates me is that this book is so lacklustre in writing but has gotten so much hype from booktok compared to a well executed book such as Kindred written by a Black author during a time when she was one of the firsts to be writing books of that stature.

I was also confused when I saw the author thank Anne Hathaway in the Acknowledgement section (yes I ALWAYS read the acknowledgements lol). Given this is the author’s debut novel I felt more frustrated that this book was already picked up by a celebrity (whom I love don’t get me wrong) even though there are so many indie authors out there with much better books.

Overall, I would not recommend this book but the story was interesting so if you were curious to see what it’s all about then sure, give it a shot. But if someone were to ask me to recommend a book, this would not be one of them. It was mid in my opinion but I do think this will be better as a movie 🤷🏽‍♀️ taken in BOOKSTA by @nathashaslibrary

Book Review: The Correspondent

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (5/5)

Initially picked this up on audiobook because a) the cover looked cute and b) needed something to keep me occupied while I did chores (adulting am I right? 🤭)

Little did I know I would be fully engrossed in a story told through letters, which is the first time I’ve come across this writing style! It had the right amount of inner dialogue, description, kept me wanting more but also wrapped the story up beautifully.

As a 9-5 corporate girl, I finished this book in 3 days! The audiobook was incredibly well produced and I enjoyed the cast of different people voicing each pov.

I went away from this story feeling insightful about the roles we all play in each other’s lives and the effort one must put to maintain closeness with those you care about, even when it can be difficult to do so.

If you’re looking for an epistolary literary fiction, you won’t be disappointed with this pick 💌🖊️📜

Postscript: This is also my 25th book of 2026 and I’m so glad it was this one 🤍 (see what I did there 😉) taken in BOOKSTA by @nathashaslibrary

Book Review: Isola

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (5/5)

This was a story I could not put down and what surprised me the most was the writing itself. Published in 2025 but written as if it were the 1800’s (very similar to the language in Jane Eyre), this is a survival story inspired by the life of Marguerite de La Rocque who journeyed to Canada (known then as the New World).

This book was gripping at every turn, and the amount of hardships the characters endured was diabolical at points but I could not put it down. The love story intertwined not only romantically but platonically was so beautifully and emotionally written.

Overall, not only was the story well worth the read but I really enjoyed that it read like a classic which I hadn’t read in a while. It made me use a different muscle in my brain that you usually need when reading older English (but the fact that this is a recently published novel is what blew me away and was unexpected).

If you are looking for a historical fiction with a written style of a classic, or for Jane Eyre lovers, I highly recommend reading Isola! 🤍 taken in BOOKSTA by @nathashaslibrary

& maybe a hazelnut latte in hand ☕️🤍

Spent a few hours perusing @blueheronbooks with my friends, and honestly, we could’ve stayed all day!

Located in Uxbridge, Ontario and housed in a 200-year-old building, this bookstore is surrounded by the cutest little town, with an old movie theatre and public library just around the corner. There was also a coffee shop attached to it, perfect for grabbing a beverage while browsing @thebridgesocialuxbridge

If you’re in the GTA, add Uxbridge to your day-trip and check out @blueheronbooks! 💕📚 #shoplocal #localbookstore #blueheronbookstore #uxbridgeontario taken in Blue Heron Books by @nathashaslibrary

Book Review: Burn The Sea

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (4.5/5)

The book that pulled me out of a reading slump 💭

That’s how much I enjoyed being engrossed in this story. So much so that I went out and bought my own copy because I knew one day I’d want a story like this on my bookshelf for my future kids to pick up and read.

Reading a south-asian, historical fantasy was a genre I did not know existed and felt like, for the first time, I could actually relate to the world-building, themes, and nuances that I typically can’t relate too in popular fantasy.

I found it so interesting that it was inspired by a real Rani (queen) named Abbakka Chowta in the 1500’s. The descriptions of the land, the food (mouth watering), the clothing all gives this book that “lush” feeling as well.

My favourite part of this book was the way colonization was accurately depicted through the use of sea serpent monsters (the Porcugi). My parents are refugees from Sri Lanka, a country colonized by the Portuguese and British. Colonization is the reason there are similar words between Tamil and Portuguese or the Portuguese last names or the boom of Christianity!

There is so much more that I want to say but probably won’t do this book justice so all in all, I highly recommend switching things up and reading this book. You will not be disappointed. taken in BOOKSTA by @nathashaslibrary
