When two completely different eras meet in one frame. 🤝🇫🇷

The “Basilique Saint-Martin” in Tours is a beautifully detailed masterpiece. Walking up to it, your eyes are immediately drawn to the grand 19th-Century Neo-Byzantine dome.

If you look closely at the very top, you’ll spot the statue of Saint-Martin himself, cast in weathered green bronze with delicate golden details as he blesses the city below. He was the legendary 4th-century Roman soldier who cut his cloak in half to share it with a freezing beggar. As one of France’s primary patron saints, his legacy turned this very city into the spiritual heart of medieval Europe.

In the background, you can see the historic clock tower “Tour Charlemagne” peaking through. Built in the 11th-Century, this medieval relic is the solitary survivor from the original, colossal ancient abbey that was lost to history centuries ago.

It’s so intriguing how a single glance at the skyline can transport you through thousands of years of French history.

Stepping inside “Basilique Saint-Martin de Tours” is like entering a quiet sanctuary filled with warm light.

If you look up, you will see a gorgeous wooden ceiling. The dark, geometric layout adds balance to the tall stone walls. The architect Victor Laloux rebuilt this sacred site between 1886 and 1902 after the original medieval basilica was lost to history. Instead of using standard stone blocks inside, he rested the entire main roof on 14 giant, polished granite columns, each topped with beautifully carved stone designs.

As you walk through the interior, shiny gold mosaics and detailed patterns decorate the walls and structural elements. Right at the center, the high altar stands out, topped by a gazebo-style canopy called a ciborium. You can also see the historic pipe organ from 1843 sitting majestically at the back.

Beauty lies in the details 🤍

Had a lovely time strolling through Albi to discover beauty around every corner.

“Collégiale Saint-Salvi” has such a beautiful and peaceful inner courtyard with these graceful stone arches, pretty plants and a quiet type of charm.

The small courtyard of “Hôtel Reynès” is just as charming. I’m fascinated by the stone-carved faces and figures, which have a remarkable amount of detail.

The busier streets of Albi have these floating white and pink & orange decorations above you, which create a relaxing atmosphere when the wind breezes through them. taken in Albi, France by @nathyaura

Cathédrale Sainte-Cécile d’Albi

This incredible brick cathedral can be viewed from many locations in Albi, each offering a unique perspective. From the outside, you see it as a sturdy structure, tall and massive. The closer you get to it, the more incredible detail reveals itself.

After stepping inside, you get overwhelmed by countless intricate & colourful paintings. All the colours and shapes are in perfect harmony with each other, creating an impressive masterpiece. It’s worthwhile to really take it in and take a closer look at each corner.

Some 18,500 square meters of late-medieval and Renaissance frescoes were executed in two primary campaigns. The immense western wall Last Judgment mural beneath the main organ was painted around 1490 to 1500 by anonymous Franco-Flemish masters, while the breathtaking blue-toned vaulted ceilings and nave decorations were created between 1509 and 1512 by Italian artists led by Giovan Francesco Donelli (from Carpi) under the commission of Bishop Louis II d’Amboise.

The richness of the mineral pigments and gilded details has survived for more than five centuries, protected from the whitewashing that altered the interiors of many other historic churches.

Carefully restored over time, these paintings remain remarkably vivid making Albi Cathedral one of Europe’s most extensively painted cathedrals. taken in Cathédrale Sainte-Cécile d'Albi by @nathyaura

Red bricks and wooden windows 🧱

Albi is known as “Albi la Rouge” because its historic center is dominated by fired red bricks.

The story goes back to the Middle Ages, when locally produced brick “brique foraine” became a defining material of the city’s architecture. The clay came from the surrounding area, with brick-making taking place along the river “Tarn”.

Some of Albi’s medieval bricks were shaped by hand so some may still carry the fingerprints of the people who made them.

But historic Albi isn’t monochromatic at all. Timber framed houses and colourfully painted wooden windows & shutters add even more character to these streets.

Walking here, you can really see history being preserved.

Albi is green 💚

Albi is known for being a historic red brick episcopal city and for being home to the world’s largest brick cathedral known as “Cathédrale Sainte-Cécile”.

But besides being red, Albi is remarkably green. Just behind the cathedral, you’ll find an elegant French-style garden “Jardins du Palais de la Berbie” with beautifully sculpted plants and stunning views over the river “Tarn”.

You can also enjoy a peaceful stroll along the river or relax at the “Parc de Loisir Pratgraussal” and sit by its lake “Lac de Pratgraussals”.

And for some of the best views in Albi, explore its bridges: the historic “Pont Vieux” (old bridge), the “Pont Neuf” (new bridge) and the pedestrian “Passarelle du pont”. Each bridge offers views from its unique perspective.

Discovering the other side of Carcassonne 👀:

Most people know Carcassonne for its impressive fortified medieval city. However, there’s a different ordinary but just as beautiful side to this city.

Just across the Aude River lies “La Bastide Saint-Louis”, the lower city designed in a historic 13th-century grid layout. It is a wonderful area to experience classic French architecture. You can have a quiet picnic at the park, stroll through the streets decorated with colorful hanging decorations, or stop for a coffee and a snack at the lively “Place Carnot”, which has an impressive fountain in the center of it.

Walking across the “Pont-Vieux” (old bridge) and the “Pont-Neuf” (new bridge) gives you a beautiful view of the ancient medieval citadel from afar.

Inside the medieval fortified walls of Cité de Carcassonne:

After entering through the grand “Porte Narbonnaise” or “Porte d'Aude”, you first walk down the cobblestone streets lined with souvenir shops that offer countless extension packs of the famous Carcassonne board game and eventually end up in bustling squares with outdoor cafés and restaurants.

Following these lanes deeper you can find “Basilique Saint-Nazaire” and see its intricate stained glass. You also can explore inside the historic rooms of the “Château Comtal,” or even plan a stay at the iconic “Hôtel de la Cité”.

Fun fact: there is also an immersive medieval-inspired camp for kids to experience history firsthand.

A journey around the walls of the Cité de Carcassonne ✨

Walking this historic path gives you a completely different perspective of the fortress. The Cité de Carcassonne is unique because it is protected by a massive system of double defensive walls. Exploring the space right between the first inner walls and the outer second walls feels like stepping directly into a historical archive.

You can actually do a full loop around the entire citadel between these giant stone ramparts. Standing here completely transports you back in time, letting you fully appreciate the sheer scale of medieval engineering.

Beige ambience 🤎

Spent the afternoon checking out the “Basilique Saint-Juste-et-Saint-Pasteur” in Narbonne. The inside has huge stone arches, massive stained glass windows, and a lot of beautiful old wooden details. There’s a quiet courtyard tucked away in the back filled with various roses.

From there, you can walk out into the main public square “Place de l’Hôtel de Ville” where you can just sit in the sun and have a coffee or meal.

Or you could have a stroll in the surrounding streets, which have green decorations flowing in the wind about your head.

Details & doors of Narbonne 💛

Found the “Passerelle entre deux villes” pedestrian bridge that connects the two main sides of town over the canal, which is such a cool spot. The side streets here are packed with classic French balconies, decorative building facades and detailed front doors. Pink flowers decorate the scene. Also caught some really pretty ornamental stained glass windows catching the afternoon light.

It's the perfect town for a slow walk if you just want to focus on all the small design details.
