We hope to see you all in Berlin on Thursday 18:00-20:00 at the opening of our Berlin space and a solo show of @vinaanina 🌟So much looking forward!

We start 2026 with exciting news: our gallery enters a new chapter with a new name and the opening of our second location in Berlin on 15 January 2026.

Bukia Vakhania foregrounds our identities as founders. As the gallery expands to Berlin, we wanted to embed more of ourselves and our Georgian identity in it. The rebrand reflects our vision, leadership, and long-standing collaboration as co-founders. In adopting our family names, we also hope to affirm the gallery’s commitment to a personal approach - one rooted in trust, continuity, and a deep engagement with Georgia’s cultural landscape.

Located on Kurfürstenstraße in Berlin, the new gallery will present a year-round series of exhibitions to complement the gallery’s established activities in Tbilisi. This second space marks a significant milestone in the gallery’s ongoing commitment to championing contemporary Georgian art on the international stage but also maintains the spirit of experimentation, mobility, and collaboration that we established years ago as a nomadic gallery, run out of a shipping container moving around Georgia. This outpost in Berlin brings us a step closer to solidifying Georgian contemporary art’s unique place within the European cultural landscape.

We are thrilled to be inaugurating the Bukia Vakhania Berlin space with a solo exhibition by Nina Kintsurashvili. Kintsurashvili’s work blends memory, history, and abstraction, creating a rich visual language. For us, this exhibition signals continuity, curiosity, and a future rooted in context but open to exchange.

Please join us for the opening reception at 156 Kurfürstenstraße, Berlin on 15 January, from 18:00 to 20:00. taken in Berlin, Germany by @natiabukia

Thank you @matthewjmclean_ for such a timely article for @friezeofficial about the Georgian contemporary art scene and its representation in London ahead of Frieze week! We are so proud what we’ve achieved together with great people and exceptional artists that we work with this past decade especially as public support was never there for the passionate art professionals and so much so in these politically turbulent times with ongoing protests of nearly two years already! It is an honour to have been part of this difficult but fulfilling journey and our London connection is especially important for @svakhania and I. Looking forward to coming back to Frieze showing Tamo Jugeli’s new works lit by Lado Lomitashvili’s lights and we’ll be back for Condo too!

‘this is national representation of an extraordinary calibre – no mean feat for a country that is smaller in population than Panama’ - these words mean so much and are so important for everyone who truly believed in this from the beginning and worked very hard for the word to see too! And yes we are very excited for the first contemporary Art foundation @kvarelifoundation opening end of October but ‘Georgia’s independent cultural sector remains in a ‘vulnerable financial and institutional position’. A fine motivation to support these galleries and their artists this Frieze Week.’ See you in London! by @natiabukia

📣 Webinar 2 - Representation of Contemporary Georgian Art outside of Georgia, State Influence, and International Reception, with 🗣Sophia Tabatadze @sophia.tabatadze (Halfsister Berlin @halfsisterberlin) and Natia Bukia @natiabukia (Bukia-Vkhania Gallery Berlin)

➡ Wednesday, September 23, 2026
🕰17:00–18:30 (CET, Tbilisi 19:00-20:30), 📬 registration required: vorstand@aica.de

Over the past decade, Georgia has experienced significant political and social transformations that have increasingly affected the country’s cultural environment. Political polarization, debates around Georgia’s European integration, civic mobilization, changes in cultural policy, and growing tensions between state institutions and parts of civil society have created a complex environment for cultural production and international cultural representation.

These developments have also influenced the position of contemporary art and the ways in which Georgian artists and cultural institutions are represented both within Georgia and internationally.

Contemporary Georgian art has frequently been presented to international audiences through the lens of the country’s political transition, post-Soviet experience, democratic aspirations, European orientation, and regional geopolitical position. While these contexts are important for understanding many artistic practices, they can also create particular expectations about what Georgian art should represent and how it should be interpreted.

At the same time, questions have emerged concerning the relationship between cultural institutions and the state, the role of public funding, institutional autonomy, cultural diplomacy, and the ability of artists and cultural professionals to maintain independent voices.

Recent political developments therefore raise important questions about who represents Georgian contemporary art internationally, which narratives become visible, and how political and institutional interests influence its reception abroad. The webinar will explore these questions through a conversation between Georgian and international artists, curators, researchers, and cultural professionals.
