Mantalk: There was a time in my life when I discovered money's true value, which you can only know when you have none. Life was simpler then. There were no Podcasts shouting at you how to be a man, often just another way of telling you how not to be a woman. Everyone knew their position on the food chain, who they were in relation to everybody else.

I have since learned that much of life is an exercise in managing public perception. This is all based on the illusion of potential: what you have now could be worth more in the future.

Potential is a burden. Often, the more potential you have, the more you’ll struggle with motivation. The people who get ahead aren't necessarily the people who deserve to.

At Mama Fresh Organic Farm, rather than treating waste as an unwanted by-product, the enterprise converts it into valuable resources that support crop production, livestock feeding and energy generation.

On just one acre, farm owner Violet Rotich manages more than 3,000 poultry birds alongside dairy cows, sheep, pigs and guinea fowl. She also grows a variety of vegetables, including African nightshade, amaranth, capsicum, collard greens and spinach.

"Farmers do not necessarily need large tracts of land to establish productive agricultural enterprises. What matters is how effectively they utilise the resources available to them."

In 2024, the country was gripped by excitement and pride when Junior Starlets wrote history by becoming the first Kenyan national team to qualify for a Fifa World Cup.

However, harsh reality checked in as they lost 2-0 to England, 4-0 to North Korea, before snatching a 2-1 win against Mexico to tumble out in the group stage of the Fifa Women’s Under-17 World Cup in the Dominican Republic.

Two years later, the Kenyan girls are back again at the world stage under the same woman who handled them in the Caribbean, Mildred Cheche.

For a city renowned for producing some of Kenya’s finest athletes, seeing sheep grazing on a stadium’s football pitch and maize drying beside a faded running track was a painful contradiction.

Yet that was the state of Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret for years, as the facility fell into disrepair.

Now, the stadium is undergoing renovation, giving the Home of Champions hope that it will have a sporting facility worthy of its nickname.

At St Jude Catholic School in Doonholm, learners take turns attending to the rabbits during break and lunch times, cleaning their hutches, replenishing feed and water, observing their behaviour and checking for signs of illness. They also learn how to handle the animals gently and provide suitable housing to keep them comfortable.

These routine activities help nurture discipline and responsibility among children, including those who may not be accustomed to undertaking household chores.

Abortion is often framed as a women’s issue, and in many ways it is, since it is her body that goes through the procedure and the recovery. Yet behind many of those decisions stands a man who was consulted, informed late or never told at all, and who carries a loss he has no words for.

Three men narrate how abortion left them with grief they could not voice.

Prosecutors want the High Court to convict Mr Paul Nthenge Mackenzie and 30 others of murder over 191 deaths, including 190 children, in the Shakahola case.

In submissions ahead of judgment on Monday, the prosecution said the evidence presented established that Mr Mackenzie, also known as Mtumishi, Nabii and Papaa, issued instructions for followers to fast to death in the belief that they would meet Jesus Christ in heaven.

“Based on evidence, the victims likely died from starvation, accounting for 99 per cent of cases. The other two were caused by direct human action.”
