Hi, we’re Eric 🇺🇸, Josien 🇳🇱, and Nora 🇵🇹🇳🇱🇺🇸, an international family of three!

🌎 We currently live in Portugal, where Nora was born last year and where we are getting used to life as parents. Later this year we will travel (back) to Nicaragua, El Salvador, Mexico and the US so our family and friends get to meet our little girl. This account is about our journey as new parents, family travels and how we design our life.

We’d like to introduce ourselves before starting this account:

🌎 Eric, @eric_nation, originally from Phoenix, AZ, has been traveling the world since 2017, diving into the digital nomad scene by joining Remote Year. Alongside running our Web Dev & SEO agency (Operation Nation), you’ll catch him riding waves, shredding on a skateboard, and hitting the gym. Fun fact: he’s got some moonwalk moves up his sleeve!

🌎 Josien, @josien.nation, born in a very tiny town in the Netherlands, embarked on full-time world exploration in 2018, spending a year in Asia living the digital nomad dream. She loves to play volleyball, knows all the ins and outs about SEO and can be made very happy with drop and hagelslag.

🌎 Fate intervened in Amsterdam in 2019, where we met through the dating app Hinge. Long (but good ♥️) story short: after just 7 weeks of dating and a 5-week separation, we aligned our travel plans, and we’ve been exploring the world together ever since.

🌎 Our love story reached a sweet milestone in Puerto Escondido, Mexico, where we said “I do” in a place that holds a special spot in our hearts. Fast forward to November 2023, Portugal became our home, and Nora, our beautiful daughter, entered the scene. We now call ourselves “slowmads” because we like to take more time per destination and really dive into the local culture.

This account is all about our journey – the trials and joys of parenting while traveling the world, balancing the entrepreneurial and family life. Join us as we share the real, unfiltered moments – the highs, the lows, and the beautiful places we discover along the way. 🌍👶💑

That last one is the solution to all previous ones 😂

Lots of love for the Portuguese food, wine, culture, history, the people, nature, and life here.

A whole lot less for the paperwork and bureaucracy 😆

Anyone else feeling the same?

🚨 €2,550 FOR A 20-MINUTE TAXI RIDE IN LISBON?!

We thought we’d heard it all when it comes to tourist scams in Lisbon, but this one is on another level.

Two tourists were charged €2,550 for a taxi ride they were told would cost around €12. And when they realised what had happened and tried to confront the driver, he drove off.

The incident has been reported to the police, and we hope the tourists get their money back and that the case is properly investigated.

💬 Have you ever had a bad experience with a taxi driver in Lisbon? Share your stories in the comments, especially if you managed to get your money back or resolve the situation with the police. We’d love to hear how it went.

⚠️ A reminder if you’re visiting Lisbon: Always double-check the amount on the payment terminal before tapping your card or phone. And honestly, sometimes taking an Uber might save you a lot of trouble!

Share this post to help other tourists stay alert.

Last winter, our gas bill hit almost 500 euros per month for four months straight.

Most older homes run on bottled gas, not a hookup, actual bottles. Gas is expensive, that we knew. But we didn’t know how much gas we would need for our central heating to run and keep the house comfortable. No one will tell you that upfront either.

Most older homes in Portugal are not well insulated, so in the winter it’s colder inside than outside. We had old windows, a fire place, and central heating running on gas last winter.

We now have new windows and A/C units with heating functionality. Let’s hope our gas bill stays as low as in the summer and the electricity bill stays managable!

If you’re buying a property in Portugal, keep this in mind if there is central heating running on bottled gas! taken in Portugal by @nationswithoutborders

5 tips before you rent a car in Portugal. Plus 1 bonus for parents watching this.

1. Every rental car comes with a Via Verde device, that’s for the toll roads
2. Roundabouts play by different rules, right lane only exits at the first exit
3. No right turn on red, unlike the US
4. Most cars are manual, book early if you want automatic
5. Always go small, the villages will eat a big car for breakfast

Bonus for the parents: look for gas stations with a Colibri restaurant. Skip the gas station snacks, the food is actually good, plus a kids’ play corner, kid friendly toilets, and a diaper changing room

Comment “car” and I’ll tell you can compare rental car prices and always get the best deal! 🚗🇵🇹 taken in Lisbon, Portugal by @nationswithoutborders

You want to move to Portugal, but you don’t qualify for the D7, D8, or Golden Visa, then this is for you.

In the past couple of weeks we’re researched everything there is to know about the D2 visa, aka the entrepreneur or freelancer visa, and we created a 30 min video as an ultimate guide to anyone planning on going this route.

We talk about who qualifies, how to create a business, a step by step plan on how to apply for the visa, and the common scams to watch out for: we explain everything.

But in short: it basically means that if you start a business here in Portugal you could qualify for the D2 visa. This can be a freelancer business, a remote business, a trades business or starting a hotel or restaurant.

If you want to know more, go watch the video, I’ve added a link in our bio! taken in Lisbon, Portugal by @nationswithoutborders

We moved to Portugal 4 years ago, bought a home, and had both our kids here. These are the four things that almost broke me 😬:

1. Getting our kids into daycare, the waitlists and paperwork took months
2. Negotiating on our house, the back and forth on price was unusually long (even for Portuguese standards)
3. Getting an AIMA appointment, ask any immigrant here, it’s the universal nightmare
4. Roundabouts, four years in and they still scare me more than anything else

None of it was a dealbreaker, but man, have they driven me insane at times 😆 taken in Portugal by @nationswithoutborders

If you own a U.S. single-member LLC and live in Portugal (or you’re planning the move), this one’s for you. 🚨

A July 2026 ruling from Portugal’s tax authority just closed the gray area that LLC income used to sit in, and it could change how your income is reported, what you owe, and whether your current structure still holds up.

Zeev Fisher and Henrique Faria of Fresh Legal are hosting a free webinar breaking down exactly what changed and what to do about it.

‼️The first tourist trap in Lisbon that can cost you dearly AND that most people are unaware off (until it’s too late): the taxi’s at the airport.

— Save this so you have guidance at the airport upon arrival and share this with your travel buddy! —

Taxi’s aren’t necessarily bad and not all taxi drivers are scammers, but it is generally known by the people living in Lisbon that there is a big big chance that you get ripped off by the taxi’s at the airport.

🚨So what is happening?

The taxi’s right in front of the arrivals hall is for taxi’s only. It’s pretty well organised and goes rather quick. You get in line and wait your turn. There are two ways to get ripped off here:

1️⃣You or the taxi driver instigates a negotiation session. It’s either you asking how much it is to XYZ hotel, or it’s him asking where you’re going and telling you the price. Like this you decided on a set price and the meter stays off.

2️⃣You don’t negotiate the price upfront at all (rookie mistake) and the meter isn’t on, so the taxi driver makes up a number at the end of your trip.

‼️You should always have the meter on in a taxi. Even though it’s still more expensive than an Uber or Bolt (or the subway), at least the taxi driver is not scamming you and just doing his job.

Alternatives to a taxi:
🚘Uber or Bolt. Book a car through the app and wait at P2 parking.
🚇Subway. Take the red line Metro on the other side of the airport (short walk). This is the cheapest option of all.

Both options are shown in the video.

🎥We made a video about how to stop wasting money in Lisbon, super useful for anyone visiting this city soon. Comment “StopWastingMoney” and I’ll send you the link, or simply go to our bio and find our YouTube channel there!
