The month of October is Filipino Heritage Month and Pitbull Awareness Month.

I am Filipino and I adore pitbulls. I have a heart for Pitbulls because, I too, know what it feels to be discriminated against just for existing.

After my 12hr shift, I was able to meet up with one of my favorite teachers in high school. This is Major Bell and his wife. He was a lead instructor for the JROTC program at my high school in a suburb of Chicago. His wife grew up in Guam and they ended up meeting during his military journey. They are here for personal reasons but I was able to meet up with them during their visit. Major Bell grew up in the same city where I grew up and I believe that when I had him as an instructor, he wanted to give back to his community in a positive way.

I will be honest, I was not the best student and did not have a lot of motivation in much of anything during my high school years. I questioned life and wondered how one is supposed to make it fulfilling when there were so many socioeconomic barriers in my own life. No subject in school seemed to interest me. I sort of was going through the motions because I did not have a stable home life at the moment, and some days, I dreaded having to go home.

But Major Bell and the other JROTC teachers really were guiding lost souls through example and kindness. Those four years in the JROTC program gave me structure and a sense of belonging that any child or human wishes they ought to have. I was able to climb from a Cadet Private and graduated as a Cadet Captain. I had not felt accomplished or celebrated in much of anything until then.

Some teachers teach "subjects," and although they might be so knowledgeable in the subject that they are teaching; the best teachers know that they are not only teaching the subject at hand. They are building rapport, instilling confidence, and recognizing the human within the pupil. I am forever grateful the impact you had on me.

It was so good to meet your lovely wife and see you again, Sir!

BRUHHHHH

I initially planned to get to Incheon International Airport around 1600, but it took forever for the taxi/Uber to come pick me up.

As I looked at my watch, cursing under my breath, suddenly, an Uber/taxi driver finally selected to pick up my ride on the app.

The driver dropped me off at Seoul Train Station at 1635. I wouldn't get to the airport until 1713.

Got in the TSA line, and that took 30 minutes. I looked at my watch. 1743. Omfgggggg. After the TSA line, I still had to pass customs. Bruhhhhh. I'm looking at the clock. 1750. I saw a military line and bypassed the regular line.

I scanned the airport signs for Gate 219. The map said it was the last gate. THE. LAST. GATE. Holy Krispy Kremes. Boarding begins at 1755. I booked it and ran as fast as I could, intercepting between families and casual walkers. 1759. My flight departs at 1825. Time now is 1800. I made it to the gate, and the Korean lady is looking at me like, "Um...boarding pass??" Showed it to her and made it in the nick of time in my seat at 1805.

If it ain't dramatic, is it even traveling? 🤣😅

Korea, you've been amazing, but Guam, here I come!
