Practice Greatness | Note to Self | 1:1:1

I’m exhausted.
I don’t rest.
I think more.
I imagine more.
I create in my head.
I feel like I’m working.
I’m still exhausted.

That’s not how greatness is practiced.

Learn when to push.
Learn when to rest.
Actually create.
Keep showing up.
Stay present.
Keep practicing.

That’s practicing greatness.

We live again.

All things are cyclical—life, death, and everything in between.

A part of us has to die with every passing day so that we can rise, grow, heal, experience, and live again.

To me, photography is the ultimate life preserver. A mechanical Griot, painting with light instead of words. A Griot is a traditional West African storyteller, oral historian, cultural guardian, musician, and poet dedicated to preserving and passing down the stories, traditions, and wisdom of the tribe.

This is my earliest and purest art form.
Preserving spaces that time, nature, and often man eventually erase.

2009/2010:

My friend Paul @sterlingpooper had entered a Mad Men contest, and Mission Family Restaurant in Pomona kept calling to us. I’d driven past it countless times but had never stepped inside.

After exploring Antique Row shooting environmental portraits, I suggested we stop in and ask if we could shoot there.

So we did.
They said yes.

It became one of my favorite shoots. The diner and wardrobe worked hand in hand with the 50’s/60’s aesthetic. Paul always felt like an old soul born decades too late, so it couldn’t have been more fitting.

Years later, after moving away from Pomona, my boys and I drove past the diner while out exploring.

It had burned to the ground.
It felt like a part of me died with it.

I’d always dreamed of filming something there. I carried that vision for years, on some Moonlight diner scene type vibes.

But we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to experience it one last time. Burned down or not.

So we explored.
Maybe trespassed a little.

The only camera I had was my iPhone, but I knew I had to preserve what remained. I didn’t know how much longer it would be there.

This is part of my story now.
More importantly, it’s part of Pomona’s story.

A place with soul.
A place with character.
A place that still lives through the people who remember it.

Open Again.
We live again.

The space in between the noise.

The noise that seeks our attention.
The noise that distracts.
The noise of that creates negative scenarios before they ever exist.
The noise that tells us what to believe in and how to believe in it.

That’s the noise we have the freedom to silence.

That peace starts within.

Land > Flag

I used to cringe every time I saw the American flag. As a Black American, it never felt neutral to me. It carried the weight of slavery, segregation, racism, systemic oppression, financial inequality, dehumanization, injustice, and fear.

But as I’ve gotten older, I’ve come to overstand that this land holds both our suffering and our brilliance.

So many of the cultures, genres, and subcultures that shaped me were born on American soil—not because America always made space for us, but because we created space for ourselves.

Art.
Hip-hop.
Hoop culture.
Graffiti.
Breakdancing.
Street art.
Fashion.
Activism.
Comedy.
Soul music.
Jazz.
Funk.
Poetry.
Dance.
Rock and Roll.
Blues.
Choreography.
Invention.
Innovation.
Improvisation.
Aviation.
Science.
Barber culture.
Film.
Photography.
Storytelling.
Philosophy.
Style.
Language.
Joy.

These were not created in comfort. They were born through resistance, expression, survival, imagination, escape, and the need to be seen, heard, and most importantly, felt.

This flag may still carry contradiction for me, but the land beneath it carries the footsteps, blood, sweat, tears, rhythm, pain, brilliance, and resistance of people who transformed struggle into culture that can not be erased. Call it The Culture, call it Black, call it Cool, call it what you want. I call it timeless.

And if something this powerfully timeless can grow from pain, then maybe the flag was never the source of the story.

Before borders, before flags, before anyone told us who belonged, we belonged to the land.

We are in relation to the land.
We are relatives living among relatives.
We are ALL native to the land, in every shade we arrive in.

Old school. New school. Life school. ALL school.

Everybody is a teacher. Every living organism in our Universe is a teacher. Good, bad or indifferent, we can learn a lot from every single life force if we could observe without evaluation, without judgment, and without distortion. Only then we’ll be able to see clearly, as the Universe see it.

Shout out to all the home-school/life-school parents out there who want to give their kids something different from what they had. A choice to learn on a hike to a waterfall, on a rooftop, at a museum, a cat cafe, a dog park, or anywhere the wind takes you.

Nova and I found this dilapidated bus in an alley while exploring on a random weekday. It turned into an impromptu photography class. Give thanks 🙏🏽
