So it seems that the pregnant #stagmomantiscarolina that I found last year in my garden found a safe place for her eggs to hatch. This little honey hopped onto my hand as I was reaching for a lil clip to prop up a flopping #symphotrichumpilosum as if to say “oh hello neighbor!” We had a little visit, I told her to give my regards to her mama, and put her back on my garden potting altar work bench thing and here’s to many more generations of this native #mantid who will hopefully watch me work and live its little life alongside mine just like it should.

Hey! You! Come to the West Laurel Hill Conservatory hosted by the @friendsoflaurelhill today from 10am-1pm to hang with me, some folks from @acadnatsci and community members who think biodiversity is worth investing time and energy into!

We’ll be putting some effort into getting those last few observations from this year’s @citynaturephilly identified confidently to research grade data points, and talking about taxonomy at all levels of understanding.

Family friendly, snacks and refreshments provided. Pay as you wish to support the friends. You can RSVP ahead of time at the link in the story I’m going to put up of this post.

All kinds of critters and flora to peruse. Selfie as vulture wizardess for the ol’ ‘rithm. Please share!

DO IT COME HANG WITH THE COOL NERDS.

What a Friday. This group of Future Track sanitation workers from the city came to @mountmoriahcemetery through a @phsgardening Workforce development program to learn about #pollinatorgardens and #invasivespecies and you KNOW I was on my “know your weeds” tip.

This group was so rad and it feels so good to get back to educating… and you know what? Teaching adults isn’t all bad. The magic of kid curiosity is hard to match, but this day of conversations spanned the issues of #foodjustice , #urbangreening , #guerillagardening and a host of other critical considerations for city dwellin in an age of biodiversity loss. taken in Mount Moriah Cemetery by @barnacle_b0nes

Made a big ol grab of #nativeplants and some random other goodies at @secondchance_plants in Broomall, PA today and saw that this fool @andrew_the_arborist is already in league with them.

I’ll be teaching a #pollinatorgarden class as well as doing a native plants vs. invasives plant walk and removal for @phsgardening at my labor of love @mountmoriahcemetery this Friday! This is a part of their #workforcedevelopment initiative, and every time I’ve taught one of these groups we all have such a rad time.

Some of the deer resistant, drought and neglect-tolerant species that I nabbed (which we’ll be planting in what I’m lovingly calling my “micro meadows” at Mount Moriah this coming Friday) include :

Antennaria dioica (only native to the Aleutian Islands of Alaska but still a great find!)
Achillea millefolium
Symphyotrichum novae-angliae
Heuchera villosa ‘ Autumn Bride’
Callirhoe involucrata
Carex appalachica
And a few others!!

Hey #philly. Looking for new ways to connect with new or existing community, find fellow #biodiversity nerds, explore a #historiccemetery and maybe even find a healthy alternative to #doomscrolling ?

In my position at @laurelhillphl , I’ve been collaborating with our marketing team, program’s team, and the @friendsoflaurelhill to get our local community to come out to our premises more involved in the @citnatchallenge via @citynaturephilly since both of our properties fall within the #phillyarea on the project map !!

I’m linking the two free events we’ll be promoting in my bio, so come participate !! I’ll post some good locations to make observations since we don’t have a formal “OBSERVE” period event, but we WILL be hosting a free, family friendly in-person event for the “IDENTIFY” period of the challenge on Saturday 5/9 from 10am-1pm!

I’m looking for local Philly area naturalists and specialists to come help me to educate the public about @inaturalistorg and their current push to improve identification ethics and practices so that their ID algorithms improve as well!! We will also talk about phenology and how to take strong photos for the best possible ID suggestions from their algos!

Most of my favorite observations in the past few years have been in our green burial areas that we manage strictly with North American native plants ! We maintain these green burial meadows with a few different stewardship approaches, but in the end the goal is to create diverse habitat for LIFE in a place of grief and return.

Hope to see you!! If this is your first time hearing about City Nature Challenge, go download the iNaturalist app, join the 2026 Philadelphia Area CNC project, and start familiarizing yourself with it!! I’ll post more about this in coming months! by @barnacle_b0nes

Was not expecting to stop in my tracks every time I walk by this #monardabradburiana ‘Midnight Oil’ now that it’s taken on its fall hues, but here we are.

My crew has developed this expectation while hiking with me that I will INEVITABLY fall behind every other moment and just catch up once I’ve snapped a photo of the weird plant that caught my eye to identify later.

It’s such a special thing to get to the point in your accrual of knowledge when you know the general cast of characters within your regional native plants communities and you start to be able to spot plants that you might not KNOW, but which occupy a space or a niche that lead you to SPECULATE that it’s a native you haven’t met yet.

Gardening and horticultural practices that take native ecology into account and create meaningful habitat opportunities takes a LOT of background knowledge and observation of the wild places where human hands do not interfere. Guiding clients’ paradigms and expectations for their landscape and emulating nature in managed landscapes through functional design means a whole lot of paying attention, listening and learning from the original designers : adaptation, mutation and evolution.

On that note, new #plantcrush alert! Spotted at Bushkill Falls .. #lycopusuniflorus #northernbugleweed #nativeplants #nativeplantcommunities #floodplainplants #creekbed #ecology #poconomountains taken in Bushkill Falls by @barnacle_b0nes

The irony of the fact that these particular boxes were the only ones available at Home Depot (they had just sealed up a bale) when I stopped for materials for a volunteer event to continue the charge on phase 1 of our native micro meadow project at @mountmoriahcemetery is not lost on me.

You ever had such a massive crush on a plant that even your coworkers (who are also plant people) give you that look like “ooooookayyyyy there friend…”

That said, if you know where one can find some #commonpricklyash #zanthoxylumamericanum or #zanthoxylumsimulans babies, you better let me know. If you don’t, and I find out, you’ll find out why I identify so deeply with this plant. #horticulturistsofinstagram #medicinalplants #privacyhedge #flowersandthorns by @barnacle_b0nes
