Was most thrilled to find (yesterday) two original watercolour paintings by one of the great mid-century indigenous artists of the Hermannsburg School, Herbert Raberaba. #hermannsburg #herbertraberaba by @nativewaiter

There were a handful of cassettes with sleeves made from the foil of takeaway containers, sold at gigs sometime in 1986, and then there’s this. It’s the only vaguely accessible way to hear the Sydney Crime & The City Solution of ‘77-‘78 find its way to Melbourne in the following year — leaving the first line-up behind with vocalist / lyricist Simon Bonney and drummer Don MacLennan as its mainstays — who both originally found each other in the Berry St squats and subsequently, one of many incarnations of the Particles. Don had followed the Saints down to Sydney over the summer of ‘77, having been a resident of Club ‘76. Here’s a photo by Joe Borkowski from my collection with him on the roof at Petrie Terrace barefoot with the Inala Girls, Scott Bolland, Mick Tate, Russell Wright and ‘Flat Top’ Farrell. While there’s seemingly no existing document of Mk1 Crime, the second line-up possessed this well-grounded, otherworldly sophistication and drama in their songs. One could only imagine how it all began… by @nativewaiter

From the archives: a cassette of songs by the Young Identities, recorded in the garage at the McLeod’s family home in Macgregor, 1979 — some months prior to the release of their first EP which surfaced in October. Since restored, it’s about to be mastered for posterity. by @nativewaiter

A conversation about the first (commercially-available) Tangled Shoelaces cassette from 1982 came up over the weekend, so I thought I’d revisit not only its side A of pop, but the flipside that combines experimental piano playing, cut-ups from tv programmes, various unnamed song fragments, the band’s on-air mentions through 4ZZZ, and heavy chunks of musique concrète. On the cassette it’s named Songs Of The Lollipop Men and the 7” sleeve, EVERything U Wanted to know about GOld fish BReeding IN suburban Sardinia BuT were To afraid to ASk. #tangledshoelaces #cubbyhouse #brisbane @stephen_mackerras by @nativewaiter

Ciao amici! Went to the 35th Holden FB and EK Nationals, hosted by the fine folk of the Queensland club in Stanthorpe. Took the 1960 FB Station Sedan which hadn’t been driven a considerable distance since Jules and I collected it in Rockhampton. Now the odometer’s getting a little closer to 45k miles. Around 85 cars turned up from all around Australia — some original, some slightly modified and others that would’ve made its designer Alf Payze weep. Instead of wine and cheese tasting (which you can always do at home), we trawled through shelves and racks of discarded memories in all manner of places, and made good use of the car’s cargo space. Stanthorpe’s DVD shop was interesting with its incredible array of Australian cinema on display. Mostly bootlegs as the interest to keep the country’s cinematic history available and in print seems to have been eaten alive by streaming services. Certainly did our bit to keep their doors open. The Italian single was certainly a record you’d either find (state-wise) in North Queensland or in the Granite Belt. taken in Stanthorpe by @nativewaiter

Some artefacts from what I consider to be among the finest films of Australian independent cinema — Haydn Keenan’s 1983 film, Going Down. Production company @smartstreetfilms are touring a 4K print of it across the east coast capitals and selected rural hamlets in May. by @nativewaiter
